Have you been in for two years, or is your enlistment for two years?

Don't be discouraged. There's always someone (often male, but not always) who thinks women shouldn't be in the military.

If you go AWOL, you'll only "affirm" your SGT's beliefs (in his eyes), and make a lot of trouble for yourself. Don't go that road --- it will only hurt you.

Make a log of what he says to you and write the date and time of each incident. Once you have written down multiple incidents, over a period of time (say, 3 weeks or a month), take it to your company EO rep (unless he is the co rep. If he is, take it to the battalion EO rep). What he's doing is against the EO policy, and he could (and should) get in a lot of trouble. Don't suffer it in silence. Talk to your chaplain; he may be able to give you additional advice, or just a listening ear. You can also request EO training for the company as a whole.

The best way to get back at him is to be better than him. Make rank as quickly as you can, learn everything you can, get PT scores that are just as good as any male in your squad.

If you can't resolve your issues with your boyfriend, kick him to the curb. Don't waste your time; YOU are more important.

Who says you can't go shopping, or wear earrings or makeup? Army females can still have nice hair. We don't have to shave it like the guys. We can't wear earrings in uniform, but we can wear makeup if it looks natural, not fad-ish. What you wear in your off duty time is up to you.

Keep your chin up. Feel free to email me if you want to talk some more: tougakiryuugroupie@yahoo.com

Put in for a transfer or do your time and get out!

um, you can still look nice and wear makeup in uniform...and you can wear anything you want when you're not on duty. unfortunately, there are some ignorant males who hate women, and if you feel uncomfortable, you need to talk to your section or plt sergeant about it. if they fail you, talk to your 1SG. going awol wont help you. your e5 needs some training, but dont let him get to you! who cares what he says! i used to work for someone like that, but i didnt let it bother me. its his ignorant a$$ on the line, not mine. everyone feels dumpy now and then, but it will pass just like everything else. hang in there, and get everything you can from the army while you can!

You need to speak to your welfare officer, bullying is taken very seriously in the army and your Sgt's attitude certainly falls within that remit. They will be able to help you both with your work problem and give advice and guidance on your personnel problem, transferring may be the ultimate solution but be live me life in civie street is not easy at the moment, jobs are harder to come by and living costs are increasingly rising so think very carefully before you leave, as it is a sad fact that 80% of solders take a substantial drop in pay when they leave the service. Going AWOL is not the answer that will only make things 10 times worse.

You want to look nice, then you can make yourself look however you want off-duty as long as your hair is in a bun or above your collar and your makeup is off when it is time for work. You can shop all you want as long as you have the money to pay for it and it isn't during duty hours. It is the reality of the army and you should have realized that before you even made it through basic.

Do not go AWOL, just stick it out and don't try to do anything bogus to get kicked out like faking an injury or getting pregnant on purpose. If you have an NCO who is harassing you because he doesn't like females then report him to his supervisor or the 1SG. That isn't tolerated and he will get in trouble for it. I've seen a lot of soldiers with problems they could have solved in-house but they chose to go AWOL instead and at that point it is out of our hands.

Thumbs up to alot of these answers....the best advise I can give you is to put on your big girl panties and deal with it. Remember...some men in authoritive positions get off on being stupid to others. If you are entitled to time off then ignore what he says. My son is Army...his best advise is Keep your mouth shut, your head down, and do your job. Everything else is non essential and has nothing to do with anything important.

Good Luck - if you need to borrow some Big Girl Panties...let me know!!

I'm an Army wife, and I know many female soldiers. You do realize that you're allowed to be girly during your downtime, right? You're only required to wear your hair up when you're on duty. That's also the only time your dress, accessories, and makeup are restricted. Stop thinking of the Army as your life, and start thinking of it as what it is: your job.

As far as the discriminatory comments from your NCO, I hope you realize that such things are not permitted. If it is truly a problem, you should address it with your CO or another Army agency (the appropriate one is escaping my memory at the moment, but if I think of it, I'll edit my answer and add it). However, you may also want to consider that if your dissatisfaction with your life as a soldier is showing while on duty, that could be part of the cause of what's happening with your NCO and, perhaps, other soldiers.

In the end, you should know that AWOL is a very serious matter and should not be something you resort to for issues that can be solved in other ways. You should also consider that many people within the military consider going AWOL an extreme act of betrayal. No one is happy 100% of the time, but we all (soldiers and spouses alike) find ways to deal with it and perform our duty. If you've been in for 2 years, you likely have only a year or two to go. My advice is to focus on the positive more than the negative and to opt out of re-enlistment if you decide at that time that the Army is not for you.

You can dress however you want off duty. You can wear professional make-up while on duty, unless you are in the field. Be enthusiastic about every dirty detail he gives you, and he will realize he can't get to you. Put in for a transfer if you don't like what you are doing. If you go AWOL, do you think people will treat you any better????? Go to counseling and work on your situation.

Sounds like your sgt is a butt and the negativity is killing your will to live.

I had a commander like that. Fortunately, he's not the AF anymore.

Please don't go AWOL, that will make a bad situation even worse, and you will lose everything you have worked so hard for.

Can you talk to a chaplain?

Well some NCO smell blood and go for the kill on a soldier! Mental Health will be your best option if you only option is AWOL! Don't do it you it will make things worse! Just take a deep breath and move on day by day! How long is your enlistment for?

Just find a anything that will help you in feeling better, if it was one of my soldier thou that had this going on i would find something for him to do, push him a little and see if things get better, if that doesn't work council....not bad just verbal to see what the problems are! Then provide help and support, that why we have a chain of command, they are there to provide support!

Hang in there and if you need anything send me a message and if it really gets bad go to mental health and just find out how they can help! Hang in there and just fight on soldier!

It is not clear whether you are UK or US army.

Whichever, you signed on and took the oath, if necessary to die for your Queen/country.

You have already done two years and now you have met an NCO who may not be as nice as you had hoped. Tough. Sh?t happens.
You have received a lot of answers about your rights when off duty. Listen to them.
When you are on duty, the army owns you, body and soul.
One last thing, and don't take this the wrong way. As you are having problems with your boyfriend, are you sure this is not a hormonal thing.
