The good men and women in our military are as diverse and eclectic as the rest of America. Their indiviual reasons for joining are wide ranging and varied. You will do just fine in the military. The primary reason that the Armed Services has good education benefits is to serve as an recruitment incentive. Take advantage of it and don't feel guilty. Its a simbiotic relationship... the Air Force will get their money's worth out of you and you will get what you want out of the Air Force. Go in with a positive attitude, an keep a positive attitude and you will have the best four years of your life. |

In other words, you plan to take the benefits, but would refuse orders if you were sent to a combat location. |

If your against the concept of a military then don;t join. Get loans, scholarships, grants, a job etc. Even if this war ended tomorrow there is always another one around the bend.

Don't join the military, apply for scholarships. If you're against the military and the war, you shouldn't join. |

If the only reason you are going to the USAF is for the educational benefits, DON'T DO IT! Because you are of an opinion that is fundamentally opposed to the military and what it represents you would not make a quality Airman and for one would not want you working for me. |

You won't fit in.

Katie, if you really feel that way, I do not recommend that you join ANY branch of the service. Regardless of what people may think, even the USAF deploys to combat zones, and if you are allowed (USAF doesn't guarantee jobs) to work in the intelligence field, you will be a high demand commodity.
Most of us are against wars, especially us old soldiers, but if the only reason for enlisting is to go to college, then you are not doing yourself any good. You will put 4 years (minimum time for the USAF) in, and not enjoy what you are doing. You should be looking at other aspects of what you can do, or get, while in the USAF. Self respect, job training, adventure, travel, etc.
I may be wrong, but that's my recommendation. |

Blunt But True

You're kidding, right? You are against war and the concept of a military, yet you want to join the military just to get a free ride?
You gotta be kidding....
You're a parasite, a leech. You want something for nothing, and that's all there is to it.
Here's a novel idea: GO GET A JOB AND WORK YOUR WAY THROUGH COLLEGE! STOP EXPECTING MOMMY AND DADDY TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN LIFE!
GROW UP! |

I once thought I wanted to be a teacher so I could have my summers off. I didn't do it, and I'm glad because I wouldn't have been happy putting up with dozens of kids at once and having homework almost every night for the rest of my career.
I think you get the moral of my story... |

Being against the Iraq war is one thing, but if you are against the military in general, why on earth would you want to join? I hope you're not seriously considering this. You will be miserable and you will not fit in with the Air Force. My husband is in the Air Force, and he deploys a LOT with his job. You can expect to go to deploy to the middle east in most Air Force careers.
Also, just because you think you are smart and want to go into intellegence, doesn't mean you will get a job in intellegence.
Apply for scholarships and grants to help pay for your education. |

just remember that we are at war right now - you probably will have to be a part of that |

Just stay home, girl. You don't deserve the bennies, and we don't want people like you: bright but spoiled as hell. You'll hate taking orders for something you don't even believe in, so don't put yourself in that position.
The military is not your personal cash cow to be milked for free. You'll be called to pay for the milk eventually. |

Tough to join the military and be against war, particularly when we have one going on right now for the foreseeable future. Intelligence will be directly involved in any fight, so you've got a decision to make. |

stupid people make me laugh!!!
|
if you're joining for the college money than you shouldn't even be considering it. there is no room in today's military for people who are opposed to war. the air force as well as the navy are in a large transition now and converting to a fighting force to support roles that the army and marines can not man completely. if you are against the concept of the military than why consider it. you would be doing people like myself and my comrades and those who have died for your right to go to college a grave injustice. why not work and put yourself through college like lots of single parents are forced to do. don't join our military!!!! |

if you are against the military, then I would not even go talk to a recruiter. He or she will laugh at you and probably try to smack you for that stupid idea. |

If your thinking of the military, the air force is the best! Lots of people go into the service to help with collage education, go for it. But remember, the recruiter wants you in, and will lie to you to get you there. BIG TIME! You may wind up cooking, or working in an office. Check with your recruiter, take the tests and see what you can qualify for. BIG TIP: Just as you go into be sworn in, they will hand you a batch of papers to sign..... one of them says that "your recruiter didn't promise you anything" ...DO NOT SIGN THIS ONE! If you do, they can make you stay in, even if the recruiter says you can go into intelligence, even if he promised you that. If you don't sign, and later find out there are no openings in the field you wanted, you can actually get out with an Honorable discharge, if you do sign it, your stuck! |
