I Could die in the military?
|
I've been deciding whether or not to join the navy for a long time. I eventually pretty much decided and want to be a Gunner's Mate. I brought up the subject of the military to my mom the other day. Suddenly, she talked about how glad I wasn't going to sign up, how terrible she would feel if i died. Then I realized that I never really thought about dieing if I joined the military. It's not something I ever though about, oh it could never happen to me , but there's always that burning though in my mind, what if I get shot, what if something explodes and cripples me forever. It questioned my thoughts of joining. I guess use to always picture it as playing video games, you never die. I've thought how likely it is to die in daily life all the time. You, me, anybody could die at any moment, any moment at all. I've just started thinking about all those war movies. I still wish to protect people from being purposely harmed. I suddenly have a huge fear of dieing, and feel anixety or something

You could die, before you ever lived.
You could live, and never be free.
You could fly, but never soar, young man.
Swim, yet never reach high seas.
You could wonder, and never find the answer.
You could wander, and do as you please.
You could stay, where hearts grow not fonder.
While heros drop like leaves.
While heros drop like leaves, my friend.
While heros drop like leaves.
You could wander or wonder or fly or live,
While heros drop like leaves.
And in the end, when all's won or lost.
And the final bell sings it's toll.
Those who died, will live again.
And those who lived, will fold.
The rich will be much richer then.
The young will be, yet old.
But in the hearts of patriots.
Love's fire will grow cold.
Love's fire will grow cold, my friend.
Love's fire will grow cold.
No matter how old or young or rich,
Love's fire will grow cold.
The message here's not to stay or go.
Not to live or not to die.
The message is but easily to,
Not make your mother cry.
For when you do come home, young man.
Whether standing or in repose
The one who gave you birth--true life,
One question she will pose.
One question she will pose, my friend.
One question she will pose.
Whether standing or lying or living or dying.
One question she will pose.
Why did I give you life, my son?
A life you took from me.
Whether standing or lying or living or dying.
A life you took from me.

You could die---in your sleep tonight--or driving to the recruiting station.
or you could be killed by a robber.
Most likely--since your a teenager--you have a good chance of getting in a car wreck and dying.
But no matter what you do---you could die. |

It is true you can die in almost any occupation or avocation. However, understand when you join the military your purpose should not be just to get your education financed or other benefits but you have to be prepared to put your life on the line if it is required. No complaining if you are called by your country to do so. |

you stand more chance of being killed in a car wreck then of being killed in the military, there must have been a time when the thought occurred to you that soldiers do get killed and if it bothers you that much then leave the idea of being a soldier to others, can you imagine yourself being in a firefight and your only thought is of being killed, not going to be good to your buddies with that mindset,i am not belittling you but not all of us are cut out to serve and that's no disgrace,if you want to protect people then whats up with being a fireman |

Yeah, it's a high risk job, but the majority of the work done by any branch of the military is behind-the-scenes. I hate to be brutal, but if you had pictured life like a video game, I'd suggest joining the Peace Corps instead to open your eyes.
Oh, and if you're not afraid of dying, the recruiters would be just a little concerned for your mental stability. :) |

Don't do it for slogans. The real question is do you feel that life is the most important value? I don't because if we only care about our own safety then what is there reall too this world?
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." Anything is possible but few things are likely.
Yes, you could die but you probably won't. If you are not a medic with the Marines or in Explosive Ordnance Disposal or the SEALS you chances of dieing in Iraq are almost none.
Dude, you got your whole life ahead of you and the Navy will be a good start. Overcome your fears and take life by the balls - you'll be glad you did. |

You can die in any job!! You can die eating dinner tonight! You dont know what is going to happen, the navy is an incredibly safe occupation. You just need to take the right precautions and listen to your superiors. |

It's a possibility, but think of the great thing you'd be doing for our country! |

You are right, death is inevitable. But are you just going to lock yourself in the room and never come out for "life"? Whether you are going to join the military or not; you can not just stay in your room for the rest of your life. You need to step out of the shell that you are in, and LIVE life. Good Luck.
To those who thinks that the Navy is safe. During peace time, the Navy has more casualties & injuries than the Army & Marines combined. |

Yes, you can die in the military.
The Navy is probably the safest forward deployed branch to join.
Howerver, don't be fooled. Bombs, missiles, and jet fuel enveloped in a nuclear vessel sailing into unfriendly territory is not a joke. A job in the Navy is not the safest job in the world. I served five years in Naval aviation and saw a hell of a lot more people hurt and killed than I ever did as a cook, warehouse worker, construction worker, emergency medical techinician, or office manager.
Good luck becoming a gunner's mate. The Navy is reducing their number of gunner's mates drastically. You'll probably end up as an ordananceman, maybe a master at arms.
To quote John F. Kennedy, "Any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile… can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction, 'I served in the United States Navy."
No matter what you decide, I wish you the best of luck! |

Welcome back to the reality :-)
Your fear show that you have mature.
Many people join the military in a moment of passion they get while playing computer game or watching a war movie. They thought that they could go to war, shot a few enemy and come back as hero. And like hero in movie, they cannot be killed.
They don't realize that to be soldier is huge responsibility.
The job of a soldier is not just to protect his country. He have a responsibility to his family as well. The risk of getting killed is very high. |

If that's what you're scared of then don't die. |

If you are afraid, and I am not being critical at all. Do not do it.
A Soldier has fears, but they all are forgotten when they enter inthe uniform, well lets say not discussed. |

You are aware that the primary purpose of having is a military is WAR, don't you? And if you go to war there is a greater than average chance that you will be killed. There was a time in our recent history that we forgot about the possibility of war, but since we are at WAR at this very moment it should be fresh in your mind. |

You could die crossing the street. That is what happens, everybody dies eventually. Try not to dwell on it.
And for anybody that posts all the horrible things that happen to people who join the military: I survived over twenty years of military service, including two deployments to the Middle East. And there have been more deaths on the university campus that I have attended for the past year and half than in all the military commands that I have been a part of. |

Bram Von Doom

The dying part is kind of an integral part of the military and war. Granted, it would be preferable that soldiers from the other side died.
Personally, I say go with your gut. If you really do believe in what you're doing, go for it. Otherwise, don't. |

In the navy you dont have any worries of dieing in combat. Being in the military will leave you with a great experience and will help you get a job in the future. |

Look...
Theres something amazing about being in the Military...You meet life-long friends..
You get to live...even if you die young...you LIVED...
My boyfriend was killed last year as a Marine...
Before he joined he asked me for my support...At first I said no because I felt like your mom does...I got scared for him...But then I realized that he has to do what feels right in he's Heart...He joined because he truly wanted to serve this country...He wanted to be a grandpa telling he's grand kids about how he was a Marine...He wanted that so bad that he put he's life on the line for freedoms we don't even realize...
Once when him and I went out on a date for lunch...He was in he's training uniform and I was just dress normal of course...
I little girl ran to our table (leaving her parents)...And said "thanks for wearing the uniform"...I remember that moment as if it was yesterday...That was the day before he was deployed...
What I'm getting to is...
Who cares?...
Do what you believe in...
And act on it... |

you could die walking across the street or more likely driving on the interstate! i was in the navy for 13 years and now in the army. when i was in the navy i was a fire control tech and we worked hand in hand with gunners mates. pretty safe at sea. my time in the navy was great! 3 hot meals a day, a warm dry bed every night. i miss it being in the army now. good luck |

Spartan tradition was that you either came home with your sheild or on it.
The tradition has declined. So has civilization. |

Dont forget some things are worse than death, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has never been higher than in these conflicts (iraq and afghanistan) just imagine the nightmares you will have, children blown to pieces and friends you will know will die in your arms. The government will NOT care about you or how you "feel" just look at Walter Reid.
Join the Peace Corps, SAVE people and not take their lives |
