Wow, at 37, I retired from the military. I can't imagine starting out in the service at that age.
But it can be done and people do it. Your chances for success are much better if you're doing it because you really want it, rather than as a whim.
Figuring out what you want to do -- the trick is identifying what you enjoy doing so much that you'd do it for free, then finding a job where people will pay you for it. That's how I ended up in technical writing and instructional design -- the way I look at it, I get to read and write and play with computers...and they pay me for it. Doesn't get much better than that. :-) |

I just turned 38 and am looking forward to life after the military. Are you crazy? No, I don't think so. Some of the best Soldiers I've worked with are the ones who came in later in life--not at 37, but late 20's to early-mid thirties. You are only as old as you feel. Good luck. |

If you're going to go, go before the age limit restricts you. |

The age limit for non-prior service is shipping to training prior to the 42nd birthday.
For a prior service little more complicated, but basically you take 42+years in service= max age. As long as you could hit 20 years in service by age 62 your ok. |

yes you can go talk to a recruitor, They raised the age I believe to 42 for the Army, dont know about the other branches. You might skim some information beforehand also, try like military.com and the different branches web sites.
Try to get a job you think you will enjoy, as sometimes and probably most times these days you find some Long days. and nothing worse then a job you hate.
Good Luck, hope your in good shape. |

You can do it, the MAX age, a 42 year old soldier has done it, why not you? If you want to change into a soldier, go ahead. |

Hey the army has changed the age limit. They will except you regardless of age. I think the cutoff is in the 40's They need people and want people. I enlisted when I was 27 because I had no where to go in life, I felt as though I had hit rock bottom. I was always in and out of homeless shelters, I couldn't drive and I was always struggling financially I had dropped out of college and didn't have money to go back. So thats why I enlisted and doing so it opened so many doors for me. I was only in for 6 years it was very hard for me. I struggled with pt and I never got along with my peers. But I never got into trouble. I got out because I didn't have adequate childcare. My best wishes for you. If you are going in you really need to be running they will expect you to keep up with the rest of your group and if you fall out of runs some soldiers would be punished under UCMJ or remedial pt. Before I got out they were talking about doing a new pt test and they had already start weighing females different. |

You're not crazy. Just please don't be one of those old privates who takes offense to taking instructions from someone younger than you. |

At age 37 you are still able to join th military, however whether you join as enlisted or an officer depends on how much schooling (or whether you have a degree) and work experience you have.
With a degree or enough work experience, you may be able to skip the Advanced training and complete only Basic training. This applies to both Officer and enlisted unless you enter the Medical field.
The Military provides a secure paycheck, food, shelter, health care, benefits, leadership and a variety of unique skills. It is not, however for someone that is not flexible enough to take harsh criticism and learn from it.
There are many benefits but it is up to the enlistee to way his/her options |

No however you should take one of those career aptitude test to see what you may be suited for or you need to find out what interest you that you want to do. The military may be able to help but but in the end you pick your own destiny. |

I'm happy to see that you would like to join, but I'm very sorry to say that unless you are prior service, you are past the age cutoff. And you are not crazy.....just late.
Addition....I wasn't aware of the age limit increase in the Army. I say, go for it! But be sure you want to deal with Basic training, and being surrounded by youngsters...so to speak. If none of that bothers you, I don't see why not. Good luck in your decision making. |
