I am an Army Reservist and an Iraq veteran. I enlisted 6x2 03052005. My husband is strongly considering going active duty, and I was wondering if his going active duty would be grounds for a discharge for myself. I don't want to risk getting deployed again and for us to be deployed at the same time. We don't have any children yet, but we do want them in the near future.

I've never heard of it... not saying it's not possible, because anything's possible with a waiver.... I'm just saying I've never heard of it happening
You'd be plenty able to move where he moves when he goes active, no problem there. But they're not going to want to release you. Plenty of married couples serve simultaneously, you'll have a hard time using that as grounds for release. |

No it is not a reason to get a discharge. Not like they are forcing your husband to come in or anything.
The person suggesting you go into the IRR doesn't mean you won't get pulled back and deploy. Don't think that is an option anyways. |

I don't think that what you describe qualifies as a hardship/compassionate discharge scenario. Look at AR 135-178. My reasoning is that your situation is temporary and you have no dependents. But what do I know, ask your legal at drill. |

look, everyone is going to argue this, however ask them if they are dual military active duty and then referrer back to this answer.
the military will try their hardest to keep you guys together, so that means if he gets deployed and your unit is close, you will be deployed also , and with a 90% certainty to the same location, otherwise here stateside your "job" will be within 50 miles of each other( not your houses your JOB) so many people are dual military.
if your a reservist and hes active duty only one will end up being deployed at one time anyhow, its just the way it works. |

My husband and I had this situation in the Guard. He went active so I was able to get out. It is in good standing so I can go back in if I chose. I don't think it is a bad thing because dual military families are really difficult especially when trying to expand your family. |

Do a search for the qualifications of a military hardship discharge. I could be wrong but I don't see where the military would consider joining a hardship. I would also suggest asking your Reserve unit to place you into the IRR for the duration of your contract.
Your husband needs to make it known to the Army recruiter the only way he will enlist is if you can be discharged from the Reserves. If there is a way the recruiter will know about it. |
