Ever since 2003 I never understood that phrase applying to Iraq. In order for someone to be defending our freedom, wouldn't there have to be a threat of another country invading ours, and taking over our government, thus taking away our rights? So if there is no threat of another country invading the US and taking away our rights, then how can those rights be defended when they are not in jeopardy in the first place? I can understand soldiers in the Revolutionary War defending our freedom b/c we weren't free as a British colony. I can understand soldiers in World War 1 defending our freedom b/c there was a real threat of the US being taken over had we lost. I can also understand the soldiers from World War 2 defending our freedom b/c the threat of being invaded was very real had the Allies lost. But since World War 2, no country has been capable of invading the US seriously, so therefore our freedom has never been jeopardized since this time in history. So why must our people die? Additional Details Additionally I don't understand how the US is so free in the first place. I mean it's not like if you go to Canada, Australia, England or any civilized country they throw you in jail for exercising free speech. They are basically free as well (It's not the middle ages anymore). So again, I don't get it. Nothing against the people there now, they have to follow orders and there is nothing they can do about it.

Good point.
The way war is sold to the public is by creating a need.
In the case for invading Afghanistan, it was simply a case of:
1. 9/11 happened.
2. al-Quadea is to blame and they are based in Afghanistan.
3. go to Afghanistan and wipe them out.
Right?
And I agreed and supported that.
Maybe you did, too.
And then, President Bush assumed that intelligence information was correct when it alleged that Saddam Hussein and Iraq had the (yet-to-be-discovered) weapons of mass destruction that would soon be used against us and that Iraq was sheltering al-Quadea.
In order to sell us on the Iraq invasion, it was explained that it was better to fight the enemy THERE instead of HERE.
Of course, we all now know that those intelligence reports were wrong and the American people were lied to.
So very, very sad that the people today who still support the president in his desire to stay in Iraq overlook the cost of American lives lost, the billions of dollars spent and America's reputation as a world leader is damaged.
These people are called "ideologues".
They do NOT see the facts.
They will be the people that will flame you or anyone else that DARE question the president.
Pity.
Isn't that the same way islamic extremists act against anyone who disagrees with them?
Maybe Bush and al-Quadea are two sides of the same coin.
Anyway, my parting shot is this, a few thought-provoking questions:
1.
Why is Bush wanting to export democracy to Iraq while stripping away our rights?
2.
Why are our own Americans suffering from hunger, poor education and health care, yet we spend more than a million dollars a day for the Iraq debacle?
3.
And why are our troops being rotated not once, not twice but three or more times back into Iraq at the risk of physical and mental exhaustion? |

Soldiers fight for your freedom period. In Iraq and in Afghanistan soldiers fight over there to keep people like the Jihadists over seas and not on our soil. In Korea and Vietnam we fought for our allies and the people of those countries to protect them from communist rule. In Grenada we fought to free our own. Panama same thing. regardless of the politicians in control we have and will continue to fight were ever, when ever necessary. |

I can understand your thoughts on this but please understand
that while you think that the US is not in jeopardy remember
what the radical Islamics have said that they want to do and
that is to KILL all of the infidels, this includes the people of
Israel , the people of the United States (religious or not) and
the people of the rest of the world. There reason, we do not
agree with their religious teachings.
Our soldiers are fighting to protect us for our freedom of Life,
Liberty and everything else that is granted us in the Constitution of the United States.
The threat is real, some of the posters on this site say that
Bush lied, fine but do you think that the radical Islamics are
lying? Do you believe that the pictures of Nick Berg being
decapitated are phony? This is what the radicals want
for each and everyone of us.
Next time you see a Soldier, stop him, thank him and shake
his hand and tell him you appreciate him protecting your
freedoms.
Go avs!
Read your history and see what civil rights were given up
during WWII, you complain about the Patriot Act because
you don't want to get caught giving information to the enemy |

I'm going to make this fairly succinct, since you don't understand.
Freedom from fear is an intrinsic human right. If you want to live under perpetual threat of being killed by a carbomb, a gun or knife-wielding fanatic, being poisoned by a chemical or biological attack, then fine.
If you don't think being able to board an airliner and travel to wherever you want, being able to drive down the road wherever you want, being able to meet friends anywhere you want is in any way important, then fine.
The rest of us appreciate being able to breathe without taking a slug through the head just for being in America and walking down the street. On your way out the door, if you actually appreciate breathing, you can thank every first responder (Police, EMT, Firefighters) and the military for living the hard life so you don't have to. |

No. Ideology is also at issue. There are competing visions for the world, one based on freedom - by the people type notions, then one based on belief that government is the answer. If the US' vision does not win out, then the alternative (totalitarian, socialist, etc) will gain favor. It's kind of like the cold war, except it's islamofacists instead of communists. People watch what goes on in other places, if it's successful, they think it can solve their problems. For example, liberal democrats frequently look to Europe and try to impose similar policies on Americans. They believed the welfare state was going to solve America's problems. It's been decades and yet the same problems are being complained of and the same (failed) solutions advocated.
Our freedom doesn't hinge simply on invasion, it also turns on whether people will adopt Western policies (free enterprise, democratic, etc.) or other alternatives. |

Most of our politicians are too old to fight in Iraq. Some of them have prior service though.
Terrorism doesn't take away our rights?
What about WMD's? Don't tell me they don't exist as my husband is over there and I believe him when he tells me of the things he has seen. Some areas are still off limits to our troops due to chemicals that have contaminted some areas where our troops are.
So, our soldiers should only die to protect the freedom of the people in the USA, is that correct?
I think the correct term is Freedom isn't Free.
There is always a price to be paid by someone.
I miss my husband something terrible and I would love to see the troops come home but as he puts it, everyone deserves a chance to be free.
I am sorry that you feel that no one else deserves that but the people of the US. |

And while they are abroad "defending our freedoms" the president is giving us the Patriot Act which actually takes away some of those freedoms. It is just wordplay to get people who don't like to actually think about things to get in line. |

Obviously you hate you're freedom so much that you don't have the courage to fight to keep it. Some of us have fought to protect the freedom that you take for granted.
Radical Islam is a threat to our way of life. This war was being waged by them for years before we decided to act. President Clinton only turned a blind eye during his administration
I'm sorry that you hate your country so much. It must be so awful to live in a Nation that lets you speak your mind, practice your own religion, and move freely without papers. It must be so hard for you to choose what to watch on TV without the government telling you what you can watch, or to have clean running water in your home.
Since you hate this nation so much, that you think we would kill our own people, maybe you should consider moving elsewhere. I'll help you pack. And don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya!
10 years USMC
I fought to protect the freedoms that YOU take for granted
I shed blood for my country
What have you done other than complain? |

They are not fighting for our freedom, that's Bush propaganda. they are fighting for oil company profits.
how much has the price of fuel gone up in the last 6 years. how much have oil company profits gone up in the last six years? i'll tell you, they are in record territory.
Iraq didn't attack us, Iraq had no weapons, Iraq was NOT trying to get yellow cake.
it was all invented by Bush as an excuse to get us out of Afghanistan and into Iraq
All bush has done is lie. |

I hate to quote the mantra from the left, but it's about the oil. That part of the world sells us most of our oil. Without it, we litteraly starve. Everything you buy is transported on trains and trucks. Farmers need oil to tend their fields.
There are a few friendly, or somewhat friendly governments that sell us oil at market value. We are in that region of the world defending them, because we can't afford to see that oil held up. It would threaten our standard of living, our way of life. There is a growing movement of Muslim fundamentalism spreading across the region there, headed by Iran. Their president hates us, and wants us to cease to exist. Why? Our culture is a threat to them. The United States' biggest weapon in the region and what the Iranian government fears the most from us is not our military, not our bombs, it's blue jeans and rock and roll. That's threatens the control they have over their people. They will do whatever it takes to squash western culture.
They don't have to nuke us or invade us. Iran is aligning itself with other American hating governments, like Russia and Venezeula. They aim to turn off the oil spicket. If they do that, our economy will collapse.
That's the truth. I don't care how many thumbs down I get. It's not about democrat and republican. All you have to do is read the news everyday, and connect the dots. |

You have very dangerous thoughts. But keep thinking them. Our freedom depends less on soldiers in resource wars than on people such as yourself who can frame and pose this type of question. Brothers and Sisters in freedom, please take note of this inconvenient truth. Ponder, wonder, think and pose your own questions. Drown them. |

i don't get it either but i don't think soldiers in the world war were protecting our freedom as there was little chance of a succesful invasion in either case. i do however believe they could be said to be defending democracy or helping the other country. that also helps th U.S. look like a little less of a douche bag so to speak |

This war is for oil. Soldiers are there because they didn't have a decent job in the US. The civilians are taxed to fund the war. I see the US as terrorists as they have killed millions of civilians so far. |
