I don't want to actually fight in the military, but I want to do something dealing with that. What could I do?

You seem pretty intelligent, going only by your post here--free of misspellings, syntax errors, etc. And there is nothing wrong with wanting to contribute and also not wanting to directly shoot bullets at the enemy. And there are plenty of jobs available that fit the bill for you. Services and support are just as important to the military as bullets and missles, and there are many, many jobs to pick from.

(Marines are probably out for you, as all marines are infantry first--ready to fight and kill. But there are plenty of combat support roles in the other services that will allow you to have a positive impact without being bloodthirsty.)

You may be interested in my job--where the goal was safety and defense, rather than doing damage on offense. My colleagues and i are highly respected, very well trained, well cared for, and enjoyed ourselves in and out of work. You'll need a quick mind, an ability to multitask, and thick skin. You'll need to study and practice, listen and watch, for at least a year, possibly more.

Look into air traffic control, where the goal is to keep people from dying. It's not for everyone, but it you can make it, it's a blast.

If you don't want to fight, consider the Salvation Army, Red Cross or the Peace Corps. The purpose of the military is to fight, not to look cool. If you want to help the military, support the U.S.O. As for the Coast Guard, yes they have a law enforcement and safety mission, but they are also part of the military and have military roles.

By the way, your not wanting to hurt anyone is admirable, but believe me, most people in the military don't want to hurt anyone either. As you get older you may feel that you can balance the desire to serve with the aversion to hurt anyone (most people in the military never directly shoot at anyone).

Honey, what do you think the military is? It is about war and fighting...protecting your country.

If you want to help the military then support the soldiers. Send them care packages when they are deployed, tell them thank you when you see someone in uniform, donate to charities that help out soldiers and their families...etc..

You can have a job that involves working with the chaplain/becoming a chaplain or have a medical related MOS (these jobs aren't available in the USMC.) Medical personnel attached to combat units are prohibited from taking part the combat mission. However, as a medic or corpsman, you might be required to kill to defend your life and the lives of your wounded. If you become a chaplain, your job is to conduct religious services and help those in need. Again, you will not have to kill anyone except for self defense. Rex is right about mentioning air traffic controllers as well the USMC has these jobs but as a Marine you will have the skills to defend yourself.

I suggest the US Coast Guard or the Merchant Marines. These are the only 2 that you might not see any combat in. Good luck

If you don't want to help kill people, join the red cross, or another humanitarian group!

This isn't just aimed at you, but i really don't understand it when people say things like "i want to join the army and not fight" that's what the army DO. I don't know whether it's the conception that joining the army is "cool" or what, but it isn't right. You really should rethink your career choose by the sounds of it.

I'm 17 and I want to join some branch of the military but not to sure which one. I'm not to be on going out and fighting. Any suggestions?
