However what were the odds of hitting the three Somali pirates with three single shots by three different snipers crouched on the deck of a moving ship aiming through the conopy window of a bobbing craft. what would have happened if one of the three pirates survived the shot? Also how could the pirate vessel reach the Somali shore if it was being towed by the Navy ship?
Additional Details
While with the amphibs off Nam, we had Seals on board so I know a little about them and their training. Just like the Army Rangers they (Seals) were good but not perfect. A few of them did not make it back home.

A short shot from that, especially from elite Navy SEALS is a piece of cake. NO one knows what would have happened if they missed, but Navy was towing the boat and gradually decreased the distance between the boat and the ship, which made the shot even easier for the snipers. |

Odds are good, as the shot was on a relatively heavy ship in calm seas, against a target within PISTOL range, practically point-blank for sniper rifles. It's only 75 ft (30 yards?), estimated from the fantail to the lifeboat. All three would have been headshots.
What I want to know is did they really aim through the porthole, or was some fancier tech involved? I can imagine that the Navy could have deployed something similar to that sniper rifle that shoot through walls in Ghost Recon AW. |

Three guys in the prone on a massive ship moving is a fairly stable platform.
A boat being towed around 25 meters away right behind you isn't moving much relative to the boat and is also stabilized by moving forward.
Three SEALS on the ground with one SEAL right behind them saying "All right guys, on the count of three..."
Seriously, if the Navy had Masters at Arms on board the ship they probably would have had no problem accomplishing that mission either.
The most complicated thing about the whole mission was that I read on early bird the seals decided to parachute into the ocean instead of taking a helicopter to the ship. At first I thought it was just gratuitous showing off, but in retrospect it was probably faster to put them on a fixed wing aircraft and flying them straight there without the delay of having to stop and switch to a helicopter. |

Wasn't a pirate vessel, was a lifeboat with no propulsion. plus they reeled it in to something like 150 feet. If you can't hit a basketball sized target at 50 yards, they need to rip that seal crest right off of your chest. |

They were not CROUCHED and they were 75- 80 feet away. Not a bad situation for a good shot. It was not a SOMALI VESSEL, it was a LIFE BOAT from the ALABAMA. Where do you get your 'information'? Outta your hind parts?
