I feel like i was jumped, thrown in a van, and dumped on the street. Have I wasted my life?

(I was activated out of the IRR.)

I feel like a total loser but I don't see where or if I went wrong. At 18 I joined for 4 years and was busy with training and then later special ops community. After I got out I enrolled as soon as semester rolled around and fell one semester short of getting my associates before getting called back to Iraq. Now the year is over and I'm a week away from being back in America at the age of 26 with no degree and no job..

I have a small old house, with an old used car, a wife, and two dogs and no direction.

Have I wasted my life?

Dude, you are 26, you are just getting started. Dont you have the GI Bill ? Cant you get a decent chunk of change each month while attending college ?

As for being jumped and thrown in a Van. I thought we still had an all volunteer military.

Get off your pity wagon, and finish your eduction, the military has great programs for this. So what if your house if small and old, or your car is used, they still cover your needs. Now is the time to be a man and be all that you can, with an education, you should be able to get a good job and change your situation, after all you are only 26.

You certainly haven't wasted your life, you did your duty and served your country with honor. As far as direction, have you considered finishing your degree, or re enlisting? Both seem like good options.

Good luck!

NO!!!! You serve your country and we are grateful!!!! It may take some time to adjust, as any career change does. There are support groups and councilors to help. Please take advantage of them. And most importantly, thank you!!!!

You have done more with your life by age 26 than many people ever do. You are not too old to get a degree and you have served the men and women of our country in the most selfless manor. My hat goes off to you. God Bless you!!

Its sort of tough on some people when they get out of the military. You leave a fast moving task-oriented enviroment, and go home to your life. You have to set your own goals. Lots of vets go into the construction trades.

Dude, you have the rest of your life ahead of you, you can go back to school and get your Bachelor degree for free with the GI bill. Your wife is still your wife your lucky you already have a home and a car, some Vet's don't have anything to come back to. If your feeling like something is missing find a good Baptist Church and learn about God, he will show you the way all you got to do is believe in him. I salute you for defending and serving this Great Country called America (USA), thank you.

What is your main malfunction????? Have you got everything that you went over to the sand pit with????? Eyes, fingers, legs, arms ,,,,your life...Does your wife still want you and cannot wait for you to get home??? Is she healthy and cannot wait to hug and kiss you..???? Is your Car running??? Does your house provide shelter from the elements??? You need to spend some time at a VA hospital or homeless shelter...
RE ENLIST..AND DO IT NOW... Your job pays you money and has medical, dental, optical, and retirement plan...Take college courses one at a time...When all your college buddies cannot get a job with their "Degrees" guess where they alway go???? The Military...Call yourself to "ATTENTION " and continue to March !!!

You are better off than 90% of the world who don't own a house (or would consider your old house a mansion), don't own a car, and if they have two dogs, they are considered rich, and know they they won't starve to death for at least two more weeks!

You should have no problems finishing your degree, and your military time and service will put you ahead of the younger kids who are graduating at the same time as you, but lacking your work experience and maturity.

Also, consider networking, there are lots of veterans out there, ready, willing and able to help a fellow vet find a job.

Thank you for your service--there are many of us happy to welcome you back to the U.S! I think what you are experiencing is a normal progression of life called "quarterlife" crisis--when you reach your mid-20's and wonder if you should have done more with your life by now, what the future holds, etc. The most important thing you should know is that your time in service is highly valued experience. When you get back to the U.S, take some time to readjust to being home. Be kind to your wife and your two dogs, and they will love you no matter what. Be happy for your small, old house--the big, new houses are too expensive to heat, cool, and maintain!! When you are ready, look up the VA Dept in your area--the counselors there can help you get you redirect yourself, whether it's to a new job or back to school. And keep in mind, in 20 years, you'll hit your midlife crisis and wonder about all this same stuff again!

When my father left the military he had a wife and two children, he retired as a captain and went from being in charge of hundreds of soldiers to a security guard at a multinational company but he went to law school and became a lawyer, the promotions followed soon after that and he became one of the most important executives in that company. He never stopped learning and he even obtained a doctorate degree. He always though my sisters and I the importance of sacrifice and to always be ready and open to change, because today you are in Iraq serving your country and next week you’ll be in the land of opportunities.
With your experience and with your new perspective of international affairs I would go back to college immediately and would take six classes per semester (I’ve done it), get your degree in something like international relations with emphasis on international security or similar and you must learn a second language. You’ll see that in three years you’ll be working for the Foreign Service living in Prague, Rio or who knows, and you also need to get a master degree later (conflict analysis and resolution?), you could do that on line.
Thank you for your service and don’t worry you’ll be fine.

Go to website: www.indeed.com - it is a free job search engine - all you have to do is put in a job title, your city & state (or just zip code) and it will locate all the job sites in a 25 mile radius of your city that contains the job title. Once you click on the site, it takes you right to the page where the job is posted (not the home page).

I tell all my vets about this site as well as the department of labor site for this state.

I have been in school since 01 have 160 college credits and no degree cuz i changed my major so many times. Im joinging now at 27 just so I have direction and get my life on track. If I where you id either A finish up school and go from there or B rejoin and do whet u did before or change your job in the military so you can focus more on school. Life is an adventure and consider everything that has happened to you just chapters in the book of your life. hang in there . I know where your comming from but just follow your heart.
