I have heard several times that Nuclear Warfare could kill most life on earth, How?
|
I understand that the blast and toxic gas is deadly to most creatures, but isn't the reach somewhat small? How can something with this small effect have such a large effect on the living creatures on earth?

Two things. First there is fallout. When we dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nobody realized the radioactive dust would stay in the environment for so long. It killed more people in the years after the war than were killed in the actual blasts themselves. Imagine a real nuclear war with hundreds or thousands of nuclear explosions! It could kill hundreds of millions, or even billions of people over the next few decades.
Then there is the nuclear winter theory. Nuclear weapons would kick up a lot of very fine dust which would stay in the atmosphere for a long time--years and years. This dust would block sunlight and cause a cooling of the earth which would make it much harder to live here. It would interrupt farming all over the world, leading to terrible famines.
The thing is, I think the leaders of nuclear nations know this. No nuclear nation can imagine a scenario whereby they have anything to win by fighting a nuclear war, so I don't think anyone would use nukes. Every nuclear nation has signed a no-first-use treaty, except of course the US. At one time we thought a worldwide nuclear war was inevitable, just a matter of time. Today we don't think it's even likely. |

Nuclear winter will block the sun and kill all life. |

Nuclear winter from all the debris sent up by the explosion, blocks out the sun, and would eventually wipe out plant life, which, in turn, will wipe out plant-eaters, who are a main food source for predators. So the "reach" isn't small at all... |

You heard wrong.
When they finally got around to doing an indepth study,
They found that the effects wouldn't be as bad as previously believed.
Basing thier study on a full scle nuclear war with approx 14,000 warheads used,
They found that nuclear winter, would last about three years.
While 14,000 warheads sounds like alot, most targets would be targeted with multiple warheads, so the number of descrete targets, would be alot lower.
So it would not kill off mankind or all the animals, but it would thin us out big time.
But since neither the US nor Russia, have that many warheads anymore.
After the 2003 Trearty Bush signed with Russia, the number of warheads is being reduced to 2,000 each.
So even in a full scale nuclear war now, only about 1,500 war heads would actually be used. far below the 14,000 figure used in the study.
To many people forget, there have been over 700 above ground nuclear explosions since 1943, and probally over a 1,000 under ground nuclear explosions. |

The theory is, that if one country uses their Nuclear Weapons, then all other countries would use theirs. Making it a global destructions. Think about it, if we attack the other side of the world, and they attack our side, that would be pretty devestating. Then the other part of the theory is that you don't just use one, numerous attacks on different cities, spread out. That would be pretty horrible. |

I read in a science magazine once that the US and Russia had nuclear weapons powerful enough to destroy the entire world 4 times over. That gas is nuclear radiation. It's extremely deadly. It is 100% guaranteed to give you cancer. You may not get the cancer straight away but 20 to 40 years later you will get it and it will kill you. Make no mistake Nuclear radiation kills just about everything. Read up on the Chernobyl disaster and you'll have nightmares for days. |

first of all there is no toxic gas. Nuclear weapons emit large amounts of radiation when detonated. radiation is the thing that probably kills more people then the actual blast itself. There are also plenty of nukes which if detonated at once could actually blow up the earth itself. To see the effects of radiation check out what happened at Chernobyl which was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine that exploded. if you search for pictures from that incident you will be grossed out.

Nuclear warfare means that their will be many "nukes" launched and the gas from those bombs will linger around the earth eventually making its way thoughout the entire planet . I dont know if its true or not but I bet millions of people will die. |

Nah. At an altitude of around 5000 feet
A Thermonuclear warhead will level
10-15 square miles and kill EVERYTHING within the blast radius.
Prevailing winds would be a factor also
as far as fall-out radiation. |

One or two nukes, no, but if the U.S and Russia started launching at each other you are talking about a 100 nukes going off. The radiation gets picked up in the jet stream and its a matter of time before every living creature has radiation poisoning.

You are kidding right?
If the blast, and the radioactive fall out doesn't kill everything, how about the dust cloud that will block out the sun for months?
Nuclear War is the END. Period! |

If everyone used it, then cities would be destroyed instantly, along with the people in them. |

People in and around Hiroshima and Nagasaki are still effected by the atom bombs dropped. since the atom bomb, a new bigger bomb called the hydrogen bomb, or "The Super Bomb", has been made and is 1000x more powerful. And your asking about a warfare. imagine super bombs being dropped all over the world, im pretty sure it would cause some damage, and the u.s. and russia have enough to blow up the world 3 times, its been recorded. and if the warfare, however long it would last didnt wipe out the population of the world then the after-effects, like radiation would eventually. |

BIOCHEMICAL WARFARE.
developed countries like the UK and US have the benefit of releasing biohazzard nuclear into the atmosphere.
it is used in war-based situations, deformaties, 3 arms, 7th finger, god knows. crazy stuff will happen. |
