I have some questions about the Military...?

My boyfriend is joining the Marines this year. He's shipping off to boot camp in a few months and I've been watching movies and reading stuff online about the Marines and all that and I started to actually feel really jealous that he was joining the military and I was staying in my boring home to town to go to college...

So what are the best military jobs for females?
Should I go Navy, Coast Guard, or Air Force?

I dont think Marines or Army would be right for me but I haven't completely ruled them out.

Air Force is probably the best. Better place for females overall.

The first thing you want to do is sit down and map out your goals. Why are you joining the service? What do you want to achieve while you are there? What do you hope to qualify to do in the military? All the services are as good for females as they are for men. Anyone who tells you otherwise has never served or served many years ago. The changes for women in the military have been great and they are a great addition to our forces. The Army for example just promoted the first women ever to the rank of four star general. She is the only one in the US armed forces. In the Army only about 20% of the jobs are combat oriented. The rest are combat support or combat service support (not meaning you wont go to combat) A women with a good attitude and a professional drive can do anything a man can do and I have witnessed it for the past 25 years in the Army. I have led both male and female soldiers and they all will excel. Women in the military are becoming a much larger group and it is a great thing for them and their services. Don't let the stereotypes from the past or disgruntled people sway your thinking. do you research, contact females in all the services not just one. Best of luck to you and congrats on your decision to at least consider the military for your own reasons and nobody else's.

Just go to college. You'll be dumping him soon anyway.

Curious
I don't know too much about the other services, but the Navy... If you don't mind... sea duties.. either being stationed overseas or attaching to a ship that could deploy for at most 7 months at a time.... then you may be ok... Get with folks of each branch and get the ups and downs (the truth) of the service... the politics... The military does give you the opportunity to meet a lot of interesting people... Do not solely rely on those commercials for a decision....

Now... as for this whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing.... you both may wanna get together and have a chit chat.... I will leave it at that....

Well first, lets start with a reality check.
Many people joined the national guard and before the Iraqie war, most of the time they didn't really participate in war. They went to training a weekend a month, they would participate in local disasters like flooding of homes, policing neighborhoods for vandals and looting, etc, etc. As a matter of fact, back in the 80s + all of the armed forces routinely referred to them as weekend warriors. And that was a just title since they played the life we lived for a breif amount of time.
But things have changed, they have been deployed now and many at the start of the war never figured they would be. Some wanted as many benefits from that tie to the armed forces without the hassle of being subject to it 24/7.
If i had my way, i'd say only the true patriots could join, since now we have so many loser groups that whine against the military.....as in your "Veterans against XXX war" groups popping up everywhere. Most are young and probably didn't belong but were lured by the GI bill or the idea of seeing different parts of the world.
As for the "best" branch, that depends on why your interested. My experience is that the Marines and Army is a tougher place for women in general. Not only because they are amoung the more physically demanding, but lots of head-games.
Air force has strict weigh requirements
Navy may require you to deploy on ships for lengthy times
And to be honest, I don' t know enough about the coast guard to comment. I've seen one or 2 ships escort a battle group overseas from time to time, i've seen then do drug intradiction missions at sea but that's about all I l've seen.
I'd say talk to people in those services and don't take everything the recruiters say as gospel. Not saying that they lie, but some do and they get graded in evals based on how many people they get to join, so there is an agenda.
