I have three months until basic training, what should I do?
|
I leave for BMT at Lackland on Dec. 9th. I am living in Colo. Springs, CO.
I have no idea what I should do for the next three months. I can't find a temp. job because no one will hire me when they know I am leaving in 10 weeks. I find it hard to pass the time or meet new people since I just moved here, and money is limited so I can't really travel or just skate on by. What can I do?

There is no reason you cannot get a job at a fast food or grocery store.
You are not going to be asked on the application when your leaving for boot camp and this doesnt need to be disclosed unless they ask! Just make sure you give them a 2 week notice!
As for preparing yourself, GET INTO SHAPE. Granted the AF's PT regiment is far different than the USMC's... but they still have one. One of your greatest assets to raise yourself from the crowd of recruits is to be in better shape. Figure out what the AF PT test consist of and start training hard daily up until about a week prior to deployment. THis will give your body a chance to recoup.
A good site to look at is -
http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/airforcejoin/a/afbasicpc.htm
There are things you can memorize too. Read these things so you at least are not looking at them for the first time. WIth 10 weeks to prepare, you should be striving to be the honor graduate!
Talk to your recruiters too... they will tell you what you can do to make yourself stand above the rest!

Apply for jobs but don't tell them you are leaving in 3 months. Just quit when the time comes. |

When I joined the Army Reserves, I had 5 months in between. I moved back home and got two jobs and just didn't say anything. It was probably wrong to do. One of them went out of business two weeks after I quit. The other one really didn't care because it was the same job I had in the other town and they just wished me well. I told them eventually, probably about a week or two after. I told them I joined the military and was leaving on such an such date.
There are some jobs you can do that will be fine to do that with, like walking dogs, mowing lawns, etc.
I wish you the best and may God Bless you and keep you and all your military buddies safe and sound. |

Try finding a temp agency like Manpower in your city. It may be just some grunt physical labor, but they often have people who need workers for short periods of time. |

Run, run, run and run some more. Then when you are done running, brush up on your push ups, sit ups and run some more. Also, it might be good to getting used to getting up at 4am. Don't party - you will regret it later. Get in shape - that will make basic training easier. |

Get a job at Starbucks or something like that. Don't tell them you are leaving for basic training. You need a job for money and to pass the time. |

You could get a job with a temp. agency doing odd jobs. Most of them are short term assignments. I don't know what you skills are, but there are all kinds of temporary jobs out there. Check with Laborforce Temps. if they are in your area.
You can always get a job delivering pizzas....just don't tell them that you are leaving in 10 weeks. It's not lying...it's just withholding a few details. |

Start running 5 miles a day and doing as many push-ups as possible since that's going to be all you do for many weeks. You'll need to strengthen yourself for the grind of boot camp.
Thank you for serving our military. I hope you will become a good soldier who learns the game early. Follow orders, make your superior officers look good, never make a mistake, become friends with your CO, and volunteer for additional work so you can get promoted quickly. The higher your rank, the more money you make.
You can join a temporary employment agency. That's what I do when I'm in between jobs. They always have short-term jobs available. |

Start working out, dont just be able to pass your PT be able to breeze by it. Study Your PQS manuel, move up a rank before you go, these are the things you should do. |

If you need money, try to do day labor stuff. If you can, though, just run twice a day and do pushups and situps every morning, and enjoy the time off. |

Continue to 'get your mind right'. You are about to undertake a very different kind of atmosphere and training. It can be difficult. READ, READ, READ. Make sure you have plenty of paper and envelopes to write to loved ones. Start a poetry book, or a journal as you prepare. Go to the station where you were signed up and hang out with the guys there. They can help encourage you for the job you are about to do. Work out, stay in shape. Visit family and friends. Rest. Go to museums, fairs, places where it does not cost a lot of money. Enjoy your time off because it's going to get real serious when you get to boot camp. Best of wishes to you and your career. May the Lord be with you in your travels and your decisions, may He continue to protect and guide you. |

But if I were you I would take it easy. You gotta big road to travel. This Democrat will fight for you here in the states. God bless you. |
