So I started out as a little kid wanting to be in the Marines like my grandpa. But more recently I was heavily researching the Army, and my parents were like "you should join the air force." So i researched that a little bit. I like the Army benefits and promotion rates. But my uncles lives near FLW and says they are having gang problems, which is a turn off. I like the Marine Corps outlook on discipline and neatness, but then I also hear a lot of people who are so glad they got out of the Marines. The air force was neat planes, I don't feel they're as tough as other branches. They don't have basic combat arms, which is sort of what I'm looking for, the "genuwine" military experience. The Navy would be nice, Lots of travel. But the ships I could do without. This is just a rough outline on my breakdown of each branch. Any words of wisdom?

If you want Combat Arms, then focus on Army or Marines. Of course the Army promotes faster...the competition is lower. The Marines have higher standards so when you compete for promotions, you compete with a higher standard of professional. However, if you're competent and have your sh*t together, then you'll be promoted just fine in the Marines.
As far as how they are viewed by the other branches, the Marines definitely have that swagger and professionalism that the Army can't compete with. As an Air Force officer, I had much more respect for a Marine than a soldier. The Marines I worked with were awesome! They were sharp, intelligent, and did their jobs incredibly well. The Army, on the other hand, was bureaucratic, whiny, illogical, and really treated their people horribly. The average intelligence of an Army soldier was seemingly well below that of the average Marine (contrary to all the jokes out there).
But, ultimately, it's your decision. Hope this helps... |

When I was little I wanted to be in the Corp, but I wised up, go Army man, you will have better pay and more options, lots more. People tell me to join the Air Force because it is safe but I am joining the Army and going in on a 18x Contract which is SF. But just research it up and check it out see whats right and pick. Good luck man!

For me, the Marines are the best, I mean EVERY Marine is a rifleman and can swim, etc... but what YOUR looking for is benefits and comfort and all that good stuff ( i can tell)
ik u think the Marines are the toughest, because they kind of are, but a Marine knows he wants to be a Marine and never in doubt... you'll succeed more in the Army than in the Corps with a mentality like that; so for you? I say GO ARMY STRONG [not as "strong" as the Marines, but still strong] be infantry cuz i see you like guns, so the 3 other branches doesnt seam to be for u
not saying u cant be a Marine though... just work harder and make up your mind faster!
good luck |

Do some research on the different services by actually reading something and talking to more people in them (not just online). and whatever you do, don't listen to the first guy posting...
You are already full of b.s stereotypes and don't need more generalizations about the military. I work with or have with all the branches. So I know the deal. Don't believe alot of negative shyt. If your want a ground combat arms jobs, go into the Army or Marines. The other branches have theirs filed under their Spec Ops and similar. It's simple. We have plenty for you to chose.. Trust me. And don't believe a smaller branch with prettier uniforms and nice commericals is more disciplined than a larger branch who serves in combat for a longer time, just as much and has more numbers to manuever. We end up in the same dirty warzones slugging it out with the bad guys if your a grunt.
To each it's own, but you need to decide and research what YOU want...so leave out the inter-branch dyck measuring. Just research and decide. Don't talk about it, be about it.
Good luck |

Every decision has its ups and downs. In the end you have to flesh out the fundamentals of your chosen job.
Do you want to travel a lot, learn about ships and machinery, and all that other sailor-ish stuff?
Do you want an organized, tough command structure that prides itself on appearance?
If you're looking for a "genuine" experience - what's that supposed to mean?! Infantry? Tanks? You want to bomb things? You want to fly on carriers? You want to launch planes? You want to dive submarines?
Also, any one person you talk to or any one place you look at is not representative of the entire service. The smallest service, USMC, has more than 100,000 members and you can be based anywhere around the world!
Across the services, everyone has about the same promotion rates. It's when you come down to individual MOS/rates that the differences become vast. Someone may become E-9 in 15 years, while advancement in another rating may force someone out as an E-5 at the 14 year mark. Also don't forget you get the same benefits across all services, as in GI Bill (s), tuition assistance, pay, leave time, commissaries, exchanges, etc. Although incentive and bonus pays may be different in accordance with manning levels - but then again that's dependent on your job, not your service.
*Chris S - where are you getting those retention numbers? |

Depends on what you want, if your really concerned about the "military" experience, i would say the army, because they have more jobs to choose from and are better funded. just look at some of the numbers of re - enlistement and you can determine which would be the best branch as a whole , not just the military. air force has the second highest at 29%, while coast guard (if u can believe that, and yes its a military branch) has if i remember a 68 % re- enlisted rate after the first enlistement. army and marines are around 19 %. just shows which branches are the best |

The Air Force has basic combat arms, i am a jet mechanic and have my M9 and M16 qualifications, as well as rocket launchers. You can always go as an escort to get these qualifications. M16 is a mandatory qualification. We may not get into the nitty gritty of conflict but that's because we work on the jets dropping bombs we don't need to. we do our part to help the guys on the ground (ie. Army, Marines and Combat controllers, TACP, Sere all AF) You can get a genuine experience out of the Air Force along with air conditioned tents, and a little luxury. Or you can sleep in a fox hole. it's all your choice. I researched everything before i went in too. The Air Force benefits and how they take care of their people is why i joined the AF. |

airforce is of lazy people. Navy is for nobodies who like to be stuck in cramped quarters for months on end doing crap jobs. Army is decent but undisciplined and lack of good training. Army does have a wide variety of jobs. Marines are for discipline a hard training. They get harder and more dangerous jobs, but they are given better training to deal with the situations.
I would definitely go for the army or marines. The Air Force is a mess right now so i wouldnt go there. And the navy, you travel but its at a huge cost of being stuck in cramped places for months on end. And you usually have a crap lack-luster job in the navy. |
