I didn't set foot in either country, but received combat pay while directly supporting airborne (USAF, not Army) operations within the borders of both AOR's from a neighboring middle eastern country, United Arab Emirates. I have been awarded Global
War on Terrorism medals, both Service and Expeditionary, as well as the Air Force Expeditionary Medal. I was not awarded either campaign medals for Iraq or Afghanistan. My thinking is this for instance: World War II, would you say a guy isn't a veteran of that war if he served in, let's say, England, in support of combat troops? Get my drift? One might say, "Well, he COULD have been attacked in England...". Understand the analogy? Much the same situation I find myself in: I was not in either theater, but received Hostile Fire pay in direct support of combat operations. Maybe i'm just one of those guys that did my part, but can't "join the club", haha. Anyway, just wondering. To all of you veterans and current active duty, thank you for your service: I salute you!

As you were in the AOR in support for OIF and OEF, you are a veteran of both operations, even though you never set foot in Iraq or Afghanistan.
I was in the same situation while deployed to Kuwait, my citation say in support of OIF/OEF. But as we never entered the combat zones, we are not eligible for campaign medals.
>The expeditionary medal does make you eligible for membership into both the VFW and the American Legion.
>Joseph D.> All service members are eligible for the GWOT medal, while all members deployed in the AOR are eligible for the GWOT expeditionary medal, whether in a combat area or not. Membership requirements for the VFW include expeditionary medals, either branch or GWOT. I earned membership into the VFW due to my Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal gained from a Persian Gulf deployment in 1990. |

If you were in support of operations over there, you should have received orders in regards to one or the other (if not both)... you don't have to set foot in country to support the mission
Besides, as far as benefits and such go.... the question you'll constantly be asked is just "are you a vet of OEF/OIF" and you answer yes or no..... no one asks for clarification of which one, unless they're asking which medal to pin on your class A's |

You are"a paper combat vet" you never left the fob, and thus you are a GWOT vet. I don't even think you could get into the VFW because you need campain medals, and the GWOTEM had to be earned in a combat setting |

Whatever you did, you did your part in supporting the Air Force, and that's good enough. It takes a network of folks all over the place to run combat operations. Good for you, I'm proud of you for having any part in it. |

Personally I'd say your neither. If you don't have a combat action then well I think you SOL on vfw and all that. You can always call and ask. |
