I don't know whether to apply at Hawai'i Pacific University or join the Navy. Of course I am a bit terrified beacause the Navy is not going to be easy but at the same time, the rewards are going to be great. If I decide to enlist, that would be it. I'd have to go through it. What should I do? Hawai'i or the Navy? I am 26 years of age and I need to get my act together.

I'd recommend joining the Navy. While serving your country, you will also be given the opportunity to attend university (paid for by the US government in most cases), learn a trade (or two), see the world, achieve a sense of accomplishment, and meet many new friends. You will have a lifelong community of support also. You should also keep in mind that at age 46 you could retire and then start a new career! There are many advantages of a military life; however, one disadvantage of a Navy career is the inability to bring your wife (if you plan on marrying) with you on most tours of duty.

If you need to get your "act together" then you need to stay in the navy... maybe they can help guide you... and you'll have a steady income to fall back on. It will look good on your resume that you served time in whatever branch you decide. Hope this helps and good luck. :o)

sounds to me like you WANT to join the navy since u gave more time to describing it than college. do what you truly want to do, and if you're honest with yourself, you really DO know what it is that you want to do! hoo-ah!

Why not join the Navy and when your done with your tour go to Hawaii?????

vincenzo445
if you join the Navy you may be able to get the recruiter to give you a gauranteed station when you get out of basic...ask b/c then you may be able to join the Navy and go to Hawaii..if they wont do it..look into the Coast Guard. iwent into the CG at 26 spent 5 + years and am now a Border Patrol agent..if I had it to do over I would of stayed in the CG..and probably would be looking at Hawaii as a future home......as far as basic at 26..I am no jock at all,I am 6' and weighed about 210 and hate to run and all,a nd I made it through..so u can make it

If you're going to join, you had better check with the Navy recruiters to find out if you are still eligible from an age standpoint. As for going to college, Hawaii Pacific University sounds like a great place to go to.

Did you ever think of doing both? If you join, one of the perks would be to receive money for college. You would then be eligible for the money when your enlistment was up. Also, the military is very big on education. I'm sure on-line courses are available, and even if you only got the first two years of college out of the way you could then finish up at your favorite university and have saved a pocket load of money.

Your best choice might not be one or the other, but rather one and the other....talk to your local recruiter and good luck on your choice.

Definitely go to university - if you join the navy now, you will be stuck without a career. Without a career, you will not have any choice in the future, you could either stay in the navy or get a mundane job.
My advice is definitely to get exposed to a lot of different professions and people, and see what you like - you never know what your passion in life can be (I met a person who was studying to become a vulcanologist because they loved volcanoes so much...).

You should join the navy. They will pay for your collage. Plus if there is job you are interested in you will get training in that field. My husband is in the Navy. He really likes it.

Go online and take a career compatability test...they have them at tickle.com. You are young, and have a ton of choices. If you join the Navy, you can go to college for free afterwards....but joining the Navy now could mean being part of the war in Iraq...that's a big decision only you can make. I can speak from experience and say that going to school while you are young..no committments like wife, kids ( I assume you don't have either)...is much much easier. You have my respect either way.

I would join the navy. If nothing else, you'll gain the discipline needed to succeed later in life. That's why I joined the military, and it worked for me.

Well, you might want to check out the National Guard. It is kinda like a part time military or full time if you want. I'm not sure on all the details but several friends have said if you are not sure if you will like the military, go National Guard. If you go to the military, you can still go to college not to mention they help pay for it. If you are single, I would say go to the military. In the long run, it could help you get your life together, teach you discipline, respect, discounts, and financially secure. One thing that comes to mind when thinking about the military is putting your life on the line. Well, in my opinion, God will take care of you and if it's your time to go then there is nothing you can do about it. If it isn't your time to go then you won't go. I don't know if you have faith in God or not but something to think about. hope I have helped. :-)

You are almost too old but go ahead and join the US Navy, but you have to know how to swim.

Dude. You are a little old for the Navy. Most recruits are 19-20 years old. The navy is a tough life. If you want to pursue that "tough life" of military, why don't you consider the Marines. If you are going to do it, why not go the best, toughest and most respected. Again, 26 is on the old side. You do need to get a plan and get crackin' on something. When I was 26 I had already done 4 years in the Marines (in at 17), and 4 years of college and was starting in corporate America at 60K.

My brother loves the Navy! Plus if you look at it this way, if you join the Navy and after four years decide that's not what you want to do, they will pay for a portion of college for you!

Navy, if you dont youll regret it the rest of your life. You can always get into the U of H, someday youll be too old to serve. Dont put it off any longer, see a recruiter today.

if you have a chance to go to college i'd say jump for a for it.many times a man has enlisted to try to recieve an education, they were taught complex skills which held the promsie of employment as a civilial. once discharged the civilian world held a rude surprize. unless a person has a degree from an accredited college their trainging will not be acknowleged. they required further education to preceed to work in the same jobs they had done in the service. the gi grant as offered requires servicemen to invest into it but if not utlized after ten years it is lost.
with this in mind, i would say get your degree to qualify for a civilain job, then if you still want to enlist in the service. by doing it in this order you not only get a qualifacation to work at home but if you do choose the navy there stands a better chance to recieve a higher pay rate, and better oppertunites for a diversity of fields upon competion of baisic training

bigdogthepirate
Uh, the guys I work with say that when you join the Navy, you joined so you can die for your country.

It's very admirable, but is dieing for your country the best solution to being in a rut?

It would probably put things in order, but do you think its too extreme?

babysitter@9313638449pulaskitn
okay you are 26 you say.well ask you self questions about what you would like to do.like do you like animals or do you like working with computers,or children.

Ozer
go to hawaii university defiantely. You'll have a good time there and get an education. Its not worth it to risk you life in the navy

badmts
dude ,you dnt nede no booke lernin-and u defanatlee dnt' need no pushy D.I. yell at you.just git a skate job neer the beech and enjoy those TASTY WAVES-HANG TIN BRO'

Fun and Games
Don't be a wuss. Get your head together, be a man, and join the navy. At 26 in a full-time college you will be a total outcast, or either really cool because you will be old enough to buy beer, but the hot little 19 year old chickies will just think you're weird.

Join the navy, see the world, go to places like Pattaya Beach in Thailand and get your enlisted groove on.
