I need help with my husband?

Here's the deal
My husband and I haven't lived together for 2 yrs but we are still legally married. He is military and my id card expires next month which means i wont be able to take my kids to the doctors and what not. So I was wondering if anyone out there could help me find out how i can push him to send me a Power of Attorney. We live in different states too.

First off Dave, he's the one that left. so please don't preach to me.

A simple call to his unit First Sergeant (1SG) should apply the necessary pressure to care for his dependents. He is required by regulation to care for his dependents.

Call information (Area code -555-1212) where is base is located, get the number to the operator on base who will give you the number to his unit.

This might take 30--45 Min's of you time, but if your husband is being difficult his 1SG can explain it to him, NCOs can be VERY persuasive!

You have 2 options:

1. Ask your husband to fill up the Form dd-1172 and have it faxed to your local DEERS office.

2. Ask your husband to fax or mail you an SPA (Special Power of Attorney) to be able to apply on his behalf.

**************************************...
Also, have you tried calling the local DEERS Office. Cause, I believe you can renew your military id without the sponsor, as long as the id is still valid & you bring 2 forms of id. Good luck!

He is not obligated to send you a power of attorney...he is obligated to send you a DD Form 1172 for your ID card. He can also send it to the nearest DEERS office as the first poster mentioned. If you have not asked him to do this yet, call him and ask him. If he refuses or drags his feet, then call his First Sergeant.

NOTE to DAVE: Do you normally project your problems on to strangers? You might consider visiting your chaplain or another trusted confident.

If you are still legally married he MUST provide IDs.

You do not need a POA. If you live near ANY military base march in there and tell them what you need. If you wish to go to it call where he is stationed and talk to legal. If you really wish to go to it call his CO or the best is the chaplains. They know how to get things done.

Sure it has been two years. But as a military man myself it is utterly and totally unacceptable to not attend to this. Many military guys do not realize the whole deal.

Again.. if you are not near a base pick up the phone and call everybody you can think of. Someone will help you.

NWIP
He is going to have to send you a Power of Attorney or a signed Form DD1172 in the mail to renew your ID card. You can then take it to the closest base or Reserve Center and renew it there, you will need 2 pieces of ID other than the ID card for identification.

ETA: You cannot get an ID or renew an ID without either one of those forms, these days this is a requirement along with the 2 pieces of ID.

The red cross cannot help with this, they do emergencies. Death, hospitalizations and such.

Have you tried asking your husband to send you or the nearest DEERS office the forms? You should give him the chance first. Then if he refuses, contact his 1SG. If you just jump to the 1SG it may strain your relationship more, and you have kids to think about. As long as you know his unit a call to the base switchboard will start heading you in the right direction.

They will not make him send a power of attorney, but they will make sure you get the necessary paperwork to get this done.

This doesn't exactly answer your specific question, but I still think it's the better answer, rather than that for which you are reaching. Why not, particularly since there are kids involved, try to work out your differences and put your marriage back together. Remember those marriage vows you took when you got married ? How about "till death do us part" ? It's never too late you know. My guess is that the kids would like to have their daddy back. But why the breakup in the first place ? Didn't you know that there would be consequences, that life wouldn't necessarily be a bowl of cherries ? Now go out and do the "right" thing. But first let me guess, you had a man that loved you, but for some unknown reason, you "perceived" that you were unhappy. You failed to communicate with your husband, and let it work on you until you thought he didn't care, and then you left. Of course during all of this, he had no idea that anything was wrong, because you wouldn't sit down and talk with him about it. Am I right, or at least close ? I bet I am. I know this probably isn't the answer that you're looking for, but it's probably the "right" answer. And remember this old saying: "I was hurt the most by someone that had said, I love you".

Get in touch with the local Red Cross. They may have some ways you haven't thought of. Also, the local recruiting office might be able to help.
