I need your opinion on military recruiters!?

We all know they target low-income schools with low-income families, and yes, that's unfair. But what do you think of the general idea of having military recruiters at schools? Do you believe that they lie about their benefits?
Opinions, please!

There horrible! At my highschool they would have contests and give prizes and stuff to get kids all excited. And like you said they would only go to the public high were all the low income kids went, never to the high on the other side of town were all the rich kids went. And the programs they do - ROTC - is just sick; at my school they want to use the school money to open up a pellet gun shooting range to get all the kids to want to join ROTC, yet we had to share books in a lot of classes and some sections of the school didnt have heating in the winter! The whole rotc thing is like hitlers youth.

They are a service and a job after High School, they have EVERY right to be there. My recruiter is a great man, never lied, always tells it how it is. OORAH

They do not target low income schools. I was recruited out of the high income school. My parents are rich, I just decide to serve my country. I'm not stupid, I do have my college degree now. They do not lie about benefits cause that would fall under the UCMJ and they can be prosecuted for that. They have a right to be there just like colleges do, you can't have one group in public schools and not the other. Sounds like you've been watching to many Mike Moore and Al Gore movies.

i talked to a recruiter today!! lol dude how weird. anyways, i think it depends with the recruiters. the one i met, actually said straight out, "if you want to go to school, then DONT join the army." and "you can always come see me, when you know yourself that youre ready." i thought this recruiter was very helpful, and didnt act like he was selling something. but then there are always those certain people who will lie and cheat you off. anyways, i think military recruiters should be allowed at school, because there may be some people who want to join the military or would like to know the programs, bonuses, benefits, etc.

The military is like a consumer item hawked on TV, Radio, or Media ads.

It is presented to the public, YOU as a "consumer" decide which "brand" (Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard) is best for you!
Now, if you join blindly without doing research, join because for financial or personal reasons and its not what you expected or envisioned or too streneous, can't adapt to the military lifestyle, etc.... or for whatever negative reasons, Who do you blame?
not the recruiters nor the military!

I served as a recruiter for a short time during the 1970's. At that time we were instructed and had strict written guide lines to what we could and could not say to potential enlistees. To my knowledge I nor any of the other recruiters ever told a lie to a potential enlistee. This is not to say we did not attempt to put our best foot forward, remember this was during the Vietnam conflict.
I am sure that they still operate under the same strict regulations.
For the record, we did not target schools or enlistees based on education, race or income levels.

The weird thing is all the low income schools are public schools and the high income schools are private schools that CAN ban recruiters so that jab at the military is void. If that is unfair then knock someone else and not the poor enlisted man or woman wearing the stripes trying to bring the best into the military. If Mc Donald's, the local Auto Workers Union and Gay Pride organization can have a booth at a job fair why shouldn't the military recruiter have the same opportunity? The over whelming majority of recruiters do NOT lie about the benefits and in fact there is a series of people and procedures to detect a false enlistment so the majority of recruits that claim "they were lied to" is small and insignificant. I DO NOT BELIEVE THEY LIE about the benefits because I have been in the USAF for damn near 10 years now and the only complaint I have about my recruiter is he didn't tell me how good I'd have it! The majority of recruiters do an outstanding job and they deserve a good thank you for a good job.

First off, government dollars support your school, so the recruiters should be allowed to visit. Secondly, recruiters do not target low income schools / families. They visit many different schools as a part of their job. As far as lie about benefits, their job is to sell you on the military. They will talk up the bonus money and such, but as far as basic benefits, not much to lie about.

I was never lied to so I really cannot help you. I heard about guys that were but I never really believed them. If a person is too stupid to check things out they get what they deserve.

Recruiters do NOT target low-income places----Jesus, get an INFORMED opinion instead of repeating something you read in the Left-wing Democratic newspaper. jeeeeeezzzzz.

Recruiters are at ALL kinds of schools, and yes they can and should be there.

Again, your ignorance slip is showing-----Recruiters are not allowed to lie about benefits. They are allowed to say 'you could be eligible'.
Benefits allowed in the military: education, housing, food, travel, steady income, and medical/dental. That's it.

I don't care how many thumbs down I get for this comment, but you're an idiot if you believe recruiters ONLY target low income families and schools.

jeeper_peeper321
We all know that ??

Thats funny, i didn't know that.

People from low income families, are under represented in the military.

Thats right, under represented.

People from poor families, generally don't make good recruiting targets.

The vast majority of recruits come from a solidly middle class back ground.

Recruits from the upper middle class and upper upper middle class are actually over represented in the military vs thier percentage in the general population.

.
Sounds like you bought into the myths that started during vietnam,

That most recruits were poor and minorities.

That wasn't true then, and it is definately not true now.

It is also a myth, that most recruiters lie to get people to enlist.

Recruiters caught lying to recruits, have thier careers ended,

So there is no benefit to risking thier careers.

Generally when someone thinks a recruiter lied to them, it was a case of selective hearing.

The recruiter told them, something might be possible, and they heard it as, "it was guarenteed."

Or the recruiter promised them, they would be trained to do a certain job, but the recruiter didn't promise them, that they would be allowed to fail thier training and still do that job.

Thats one of the biggest issues, people enlist for a certain job, for the enlistment bonus, and then when they fail the training for that job, and are assigned another job, they think they were cheated out of thier bonus.

No matter, the bonus was for those who completed training, something which they didn't do.

I never knew that they only target low income areas.

Anyway, they tell you everything that you need to know. Mine never lied to me. Many things do get screwed up in the military. It's not the recruiters fault. Human being run the government and the military. Human beings do the paper work. Some times that gets messed up.

There are good Recruiters and bad Recruiters, Sadly the bad Recruiters tend to make it harder for the good ones.
Communities are divided into areas or sectors. You may have two or three county's in an area. It depends on their size. Recruiters operate in their sector. This includes High schools and colleges. A recruiter is given a mission of enlisting so many recruits in a period of time. If he is successful then he may stay as a recruiter for a good period of time. If not then he will more than likely be replaced. It is a hard job, long hours and a lot of paper work. A good Recruiter will not lie to an applicant. It is too hard to regain the trust of the community and the ones he is trying to enlist. One lie can turn him or her from a successful Recruiter to an unsuccessful one.

My husband is currently a recruiter and does not target low income schools or families. Each recruiter is assigned to certain schools, his are all actually full of very wealthy kids who already have college paid for and drive BMWs that mommy & daddy bought. So I'm sorry but I don't agree with that.

I do not think there is anything wrong with them being at the high schools. Do you think there is something wrong with college recruiters, or police department recruiters being at the schools during career fairs and stuff like that? All they are doing is helping them to explore another option they have after high school. If you want we can stop all recruiting and just re-instate a draft. Maybe then you'll feel better knowing we don't have recruiters "targeting low income schools and familes, and in our high schools".

They do not lie about benefits either, not that I have ever seen. Every benefit they tell them about you could also find on the internet. They are not liars.

I have never met a recruiter I liked (16 years thus far) as all are just a bunch of salesmen. Try getting service after the sale from one of those people!

I believe they will lie to get you to sign up. Always read all the fine print before signing anything.
