I am a retired Paratrooper (American - 82nd Airborne) and I am not sure you are asking the right question(s). You should be asking what are the defined missions of each type of organization, and then what am I really cut out for? Keep in mind, don't ask yourself "what am I really good at", but more of "what areas am I weak in". Anyone can toot their own horn, and think they have little or no room for improvement. Last is "What can you bring to a unit that has a great heritage or lineage such as the paras or marines. When you can answer those questions, then you will be able to make an educated decision. |

Look at it this way: If you're not good enough for Royal.... The Paras will have you! |

Having spent 4 years in the Army I would advise nowadays joining the Marines just for the fact they are on the Navy's budget and you get treated better and will have more opportunities, the entry level is also higher for Marines in terms of education so you won't be surrounded by as many idiots as in the Para's!! but to be honest though most regiments are pretty much like for like as they all do much the same thing at the end of the day.
All regiments in the Army and the Marines are going to expect recruits to work hard and be switched on, the main differences between the two are the obvious amphibious capabilities of the marines, many marines also go on to do Parachute training anyhow. |

It Might help you, if you find out which of the two outfits are willing to accept YOU! |

Hello

Toss a coin and STICK WITH THE FIRST RESULT... to change your mind means you're not worthy to be in either Regiment !
If YOU cannot decide YOUR OWN future career.. either of these Regiments are NOT for you... mind you...
Having said that, the Armed Forces LIKE people who can't think for themselves... so, let's see if you can follow orders here..
Join the Royal Marines !
Why? Cos -
a) QUOTE " Special Air Service is to move its parachute training to the United States because it believes that the Royal Air Force no longer has the skills to train its soldiers in Britain." UNQUOTE (1st link below)
b) QUOTE "No jumps for Paras as MoD cuts £1bn. Parachute training in the Army is set to be halted for four years as part of a £1 billion cost-cutting programme by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Members of the Parachute Regiment will not receive parachute training" (2nd link below)
At least in the Marines, you have a chance to survive - as long as you can swim ;-).. unlike being thrown out of an airplane at 3,000'.... ;-)
So, are you good at following orders....?
Simple Solution !

Either would be good.
I joined the navy but wished I had joined the marines or para's. I don't regret my decision but if I had my time again I would join either of those.
It all depends on what you want to do. Look on the internet at both and also call in at the careers office and speak with both careers officers.
Good luck |

Don,t join either.Get a job in civvy street and stay normal and stay alive. I think all immigrants to this country should engage in at least one years "national service". |

Well both are better at certain jobs that they're trained to do.
paras - airbourne troops for hard-hitting effectiveness and patrolling behind enemy line.
marines commandos - better for amphibious assaults, beach assaults and using landing craft to land at the coasts and march inland for surpirise. Both are very elite forces and it IS a tough choice, I still can't choose, i'm at the same place but probably i would go for the marines. Serving in the royal navy, the one armed force that has defended britain and never lost a battle, that should make you proud. |

It seems to me that you have somehow missed the point. The question you should be asking is "Would I be acceptable to the Royal Marines or Parachute Regiment" It is not possible to just walk in to these units without certain basic traits in your character and superb physical fitness. Having said that, most British army regiments have a proud heritage dating back hundreds of years and The Royal navy has something of a reputation worldwide also. Beetle along to the local Army/Navy & Airforce recruiting centre and seek proffessional advice! |

Dont know how the British Military works, but coming from an American; our Air Force has Paratroopers then our Army and Marines have airborne Troops, why not compromise and go Airborne Marine? |

To put it another way....
God was a marine....

Basically, if you dont know which then you wont get into either. You have too know what you want to get into such tough units. |

The real difference is the pool in which they pick from....small fish in a big pond vs. Large fish in a small pond...In other words in the US there are alot of men...so it becomes more competetive to become an elite soldier. Much easier in a smaller pond to be picked due to what is available to join and be trained....the requirements are what you should seek and see if you can meet those requirements. |

You have it all wrong. Can't you see they need a hand in the Navy? Come on, protect the motherland in the Navy. Come on and join your fellow man in the Navy. Come on, lad, and make a stand, in the Navy. They want you as a new recruit. |
