I think I am destined to be a military infantry officer, but want to have a healthy body when i'm older?

I have always liked the military. I used to play toy soldiers when I was younger, loved to watch anything remotely military related (action movies when I was younger, documentaries when I was older), and I have read hundred of hours of military tactical and strategical study to help improve my gameplay with other people in online games. It is not something to be too proud of, but i'm also great with organizing groups of people in an online environment to work as a cohesion force.
Well, i'm trying to figure out what I want to do in life and I want to be a pharmacist. Although I am in the National Guard as a medic because I wanted to stay home as much as possible and explore the health industry. Being a medic is fine, but I always notice myself looking up historically information relating to strategy and tactics.
I thought about being an infantry officer but I have only three problems with that.
One: I read a lot about how infantry grunts have horrible health when they get out. Bad backs, pain for the rest of their life, and the sort. I am not even worried about the wounded or killed part, its just that I want to be healthy when i'm older if I don't get shot or wounded.
Two: The boredom of Army work. Since I have completed my training and been in the Guard for a while now (I've been to one AT to Honduras and around 10 drills now). I don't want to have a boring job, yet I like reading and studying about warfare as it relates on a economic, strategic, grand, and individual level.
Three: I don't want to do the extreme hard work grunts do. This relates back to the health issues. While officers may not be required to do PT with their soldiers are have to do as much physical work as their soldiers, if I become an officer, I would want to be one that does just as much hard work as the grunts and then some!
So, should I be an infantry officer? Are there any other career fields related to that tract? Perhaps I should get in politics or executive business? Doesn't sound as fun as Army stuff though, even if the Army is terribly boring most of the time.
I need some insight and guidance here. My current track is Pharmacist. It used to be pilot, cop, and architect.

Please ignore some of the negative comments listed above.
Don't get me wrong, I love the military, and the way of life. However, don't let anyone tell you that the military is worth your health. I know from personal experiences that training can eat-up soldiers, especially there knees. I have many friends whose hubbies are grunts, and are falling apart! And they are in there mid-20's.The military is kicking out my close friends husband, because his knees are warn down, and so is his back. As much as I love the military, it just seems they will take and take, once you are hurt, they want to drop you.
I think you should think about this, and do what your heart is telling you. I know you can have a MOS working in the Pharmacy, I see soldiers everyday, working for the pharmacist, in the Army. I would look into what you need to do to make that happen. Don't let the recruiter talk you into doing something you don't want to do!
Good luck! |

You are afraid of hard work and what it will do to your body?
I know people hate it when wives answer but....
My husband is a Gysgt in the USMC and is 35 years old. He is in infantry and I guarantee he is in better shape and physical strength than you. It is a hard life at times, but it has not destroyed him. He is perfectly functioning, strong and healthy and has 5 years left till retirement. I don't think he will need a walker at 40 or a cane. If you are afraid of hard work, I suggest you avoid the USMC. They will work you harder if you whine or worry about the pain and physical stress.
With your crying mentality I don't even know if you could handle my Graduate classes for my MBA. You might pull a brain muscle. |
