Everyone wants to be a green beret or a navy seal its not like the video games where its easy to pull the trigger and what all of the sudden everyone is in awesome shape ready to run 20 miles and continue training the rest of the day

I also love it when they "know it all", and refuse to listen to any current Military or Vet who has been through it all. Reality is going to kick them in the face when they end up as a cook in the Army.

You're absolutely, 100% correct. The games glorify what should not and is not glory. I spent 6 years active duty in the Corps. 50% of the guys that I went through training with were KIA in vietnam. There's no glory in that! I was lucky. I came back. But once they get it in their head to enlist (seeking the video thrill of it), there's very little time to give them the straight scoop. While it's true that some people are destined and 'made' for military life, combat, etc. many are inspired by fiction. Too bad. My own son wanted to enlist in the Corps when he was 17 (like follow in daddy's footrsteps). I spent the better part of a year enlightening him. But that's a story for another time. Anyway, wish we could put together a true picture for these people.

I think its funny when there in 8th grade saying they want to do special force/spec ops.

im nearly 15 and im joining the Parachute regt next year ... do i play video games and watch movies when i train 6 days a week, running 3 - 5 miles a day, timing my self at press ups and sit ups trying to push out atleast one more rep?? am i one of them as i have built up a 12 week exercise programme to help build my fitness up, just because i play COD4 or watch war movies??

Who doesn't want to be the best? No one says "I want to be front line infantry!!!" because anyone that can survive the training and pass the ASVAB can do it. The Special Forces are selective, which is why they get the glory and everyone wants to be one.

The irony of this is that the SOCOM motto is "Quiet Proffesionals" and that the army and marines get credit for many things that SOCOM actually accomplishes.
