I want to fly Army helicopters.?

When I'm old enough I want to join the Army and fly helicopters but I don't know where to start.
Can somebody tell me step by step what I would have to do to join the army and start flying helicopters.
P.S
I know I can't just barge into the army and start flying helicopters.
I know I have to work my way up.
P.S.S
I want work my way up so I can start flying an Apache.

Two of the most important "gateways" to pass through to even be considered for Army Aviation include passing the Alternate Flight Aptitude Selection Test (AFAST) and the Flight Physical.
It is easier to get a Flight School slot as a Warrant Officer than a Commissioned Officer. This is because there are 3-4 times the number of Warrants vs. Commissioned in the Aviation community. But that choice is up to you. Warrants will fly more and are considered the technical gurus in the field. Commssioned officers will pull double-duty basically, performing their job as an aviator AND commander. Commissioned officers in aviation are the platoon leaders, executive officers, company commanders, battalion staff officers, and battalion commanders.
My advice to you is to do well in your academics in school, play sports, and take up leadership positions in organizations, clubs, and varsity athletics. People who make good aviators are those that can multi-task. In Flight School, you will experience this (not uncommon to go weeks of having 12-16 hour work days of flying/class/studying/mission planning).
As far as a specific airframe goes, don't worry about that now. Focus on your near-term goals.

Actually, there is a program that (if you are accepted) will allow you to enter the army for the specific purpose of becoming a helo pilot....commonly referred to as high school to flight school. YOu would enter the army and go to basic. After that, you would go to warrant officer training. If you successfully complete that, it is on to flight school. Here is the link referencing this. http://www.goarmy.com/about/warrant_officer.jsp
Call a recruiter (you still have to go through them) and get some more specific details. You can also enlist into the army and apply to the flight program that way. Flying warrants are the only warrants that do not have Time in Service or any specific army school requirements.
Good luck. |

You can go in and start flying helicopters right away!
Google "High school to flight school"
If selected you will go to basic training and then to warrant officer candidate school then to flight school to learn to fly!
Good Luck |

Another option that you could explore is the Army ROTC program. Granted you would have to wait a few more years to fly, BUT you would get a higher education and become a 2nd Lieutenant (you must be an officer to be considered) after graduating. Around your junior year of college you "rank" your top 3 branches based on what you would most like to do (ex. 1. Aviation, 2. Field Artillery, 3. Chemical Corps). You would then head out to LDAC (Leader Development and Assessment Course), and based upon your scores there and your overall G.P.A. the different branches (that you chose during your junior year) "draft" you. However, the Aviation branch is rather competitive so you need good scores both academically and physically. The ROTC program is a really great experience, and if you are really serious I would recommend talking to either a recruiter or someone in the ROTC at your prospective college or just check out the Army ROTC web page. Hope this helps, Good Luck!
P.S. the Army ROTC program will pay for either your room and board or tuition plus pay you a monthly stipend starting at $300 your freshman year. |

go talk to a recruiter.... if your smart enough there is no reason that you cant be a pilot... you get to pick your job based on how smart you are |

Talk to a recruiter. You join the army as a helicopter pilot. The requirements are much higher than other jobs. Also, you go in as a warrant officer, not enlisted. |

Your friendly Army recruiter can help you. Start by spending some time with one. |

You'll need to be an officer. You could fly as a warrant officer but it would take you a long time to become one. Go to OCS/OTS and then you'll go to flight school. Good luck. |
