I admire your ambition and your patriotic desire. If you cannot talk your parents into it then respect them. I would think your dad would understand but I know as a parent they are totally afraid for you.
I met my husband in the Army...it was the best thing in the world...even if he went to Viet Nam. I am so proud of him...and even me for being part of a great country and being able to do something for it. There are careers in the Army that amaze you. I worked with the FBI out of Fort Meade Maryland and had a blast. It was fun traveling with them and doing my job as a WAC! (that was a LONG time ago). My husband was with NSA (National Security Association...and so while neither of us could talk about what we did....it was exciting.
Your dad sees the world in a totally different light than most of us do. He sees the things that are wrong and horrible....and we live in this other world where things aren't perfect but we don't have to deal with what he does on a daily basis.
I think you could leave it alone for a year and see where you are in a year and if you feel the same way. If you do then you can tell them that you gave it a year and it is something you have to do...for yourself. They will respect that.
You know honey...it is difficult to be a parent. All your life you nuture and care for and protect this little child that is a total gift from God. You watch it grow and keep it from harm...you teach it all the things it needs to be as good as he can be.
Then suddenly a day rolls around and Guess what...BIRTHDAY TIME...I AM 18 and NOW you cant' tell me what to do anymore. I am an adult.
In reality you are not an adult...emotionally and financially and education and job wise...you are still inexperienced and need help.
How do you stop being a parent just because some day rolls around and the law says...you are on your own.
There are two levels here....emotional and legal. Your parents know you better than anyone in the world..and you have respected them and love them.....that says a lot about your relationship.
Would it hurt to wait a year and see if you are where you should be then? Give yourself a year to gain some experience and sort things out.
Even as an adult you sometimes need to wait a little and let things "stir" a bit before making a HUGE decision. A day or two or a year can make a huge difference.
I admire our men and women who serve this country....they are selfless and wonderful and courageous and brave and absolutely the best our country has. I would never tell anyone NOT to join...not even my sons...but I would ask them to wait a bit to make sure this is right for them.
So many decisions are made hastily...and regretted. This is one decision that has a long term to it...and it deserves a little thought and research and gathering of information. When you get all your ducks in a row you can present it to your parents so they know you responsibly thought it out and gave them time to accept it.
Good luck in whatever you decide. Your parents will be proud of you and love you no matter what you choose to do....but I hope you wait a little while...at least 6 MONTHS to think it out.
I am praying for you. And to those that don't want to serve this country that is ok. But we need people to defend our country....and if you don't do it who is? The military is something that you WANT to do and sometimes feel you should do. What is the difference between going into the service and being in gangs and getting everyone pregnant and doing drugs etc? THAT IS SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF?
God Bless our Servicemen and women God Bless them for being our hero's. |

Does the University have a ROTC program?
You could do that instead of just signing up in three days.
I don't know, I just though it might be a good way to ease them into you joining up without having to commit to it yet.

Is enrolling in Army ROTC the same as joining the Army? Once a student starts taking ROTC courses, is he/she obligated to join the Army?
...Enrolling in the ROTC Basic Course (the first two years of college) does NOT obligate you to serve unless you have also received a scholarship...
http://www.goarmy.com/rotc/index.jsp
Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) is one of the best leadership courses in the country and is part of your college curriculum. During classes, leadership labs, physical training and field training exercises, you will learn firsthand what it takes to lead others, motivate groups and conduct missions as an Officer in the Army. Upon graduation from Army ROTC, you will earn the bar of a Second Lieutenant and be commissioned into the Active Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard and become a leader for life. |

Do not listen to these people telling you it is the worst decision of your life and blah blah blah. If you truly feel that you want to joint the army to serve your country and you know the sacrifices you will have to make but you accept them because you love this country and are willing to lay your life on the line to protect this nation and its inhabitants, then by all means do what you want and join. You can tell your parents that they can either support you in your decision even if they don't agree because you are their child and they should support you, or that they can stand in your way. I also want to join the military and understand how you feel about wanting to join. Do no listen to the people who say their friends regreted it. For one, they hav enot done it so they do not actually know, and second, their friends did it for the wrong reasons if they regreted it. Being somebody who wants to join like you, i know that most people just won't understand why you want to join and won't understand that you know it will be a huge sacrifice but you are willing to pay that debt because you love this country and would die for it. Obviously, the people telling you that it is stupid do not love this country the way that you and I do and probably will never understand. But in the end it is up to you to decide what you want to do with your life. I hope you make the right choice for yourself, even if it does not mean you join. And if you do join, be proud. Good luck. |

Some of my friends said joining the army is one of the best things they did in their life... The quality of life isnt as bad as some people like to think.. its not living in the trenches all the time. The only time you might have worse quality of life is during missions... afterwards you even get danger pay! |

If your parents are paying for your school, most likely they are b/c each is probably making a six fig salary, then continue to school because you will definitely make more money after your university rather than joining the Army. The military isn't right for you b/c you have it made already.
Don't do it. |

That's great that you want to serve your country. Im so glad that here in the US that every man isnt' like Obama who has no regard at all for the military. Glad to see you will defend your country against enemies. That's being a real man. |

Well, in the US, if you are eighteen years of age you are an adult and can do what ever flips your switch. Now if mum and dad are paying for your schooling then take the free ride, get your education while you can, after that, do what you want. |

Rawr,
Way to respect your parents. What reasons are they giving you for not wanting you to join? I recommend you lay out a plan for why you want to join, what it is going to do for you , and how you can use this to your benefit. At the end of the day they need to respect the fact that their little boy is making a man sized decision. Also have a recruiter help. (might have to be by phone) but ultimately it will be an easier decision with your parents backing. If they still say no, rather than get whiny, you may ask them what you need to do in order for them to see how important this is for you.
Good luck |

DO IT!!! These other people need to get a grip. My husband and i grew up very poor (him more then I). Today we have a 3 br home and we are paying for someone elseS home (long story). We have nice things, a hummer and f-250. We never worry about money and all our old friends had to move home (with parents) when the economy got bad. We got a raise. DO IT. The army is like everything else in life you get out of it what you put in. DO IT |

Are you an American citizen? If you are, then at 18 your parents have no say in the matter. You can join if you want to. |
