That is not true at all. There are two different sports categories in the military. You have your Academy sports, where future officers are being trained and play sports just like any other college, and then you have your Enlisted sporting events where they compete with other lower divisions. These are called the All Service teams. Now they will only miss a deployment IF their commanding officer aproves them for it and this will only happen if the sport they compete in is in its season. Sorry but that recruiter is lying. Most recruiters are honest and forthcoming but you do get the ones that will say almost anything to get a contract. Please see: http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/joiningup/a/recruiter.htm

Even if you are against him going in to the Marines you need to be supportive of his decision if thats what he wants to do. The military can provide your child (and you if you get married) with health insurance which is really expensive. And also other benefits. And just because he is joining the military doesn't mean he will just get sent to war and die. Thats a worry and should not be a focal point.

He would have to be an exceptional athlete. He would have to be good enough to be recruited for collage. Chances are its a ploy to get him to sign the dotted line.

If you want the benefits you have to make the sacrifice.

That is very untrue

It's a lie and a very stupid one at that.

What sports teams does the USMC have that you have heard of???

They only have inter-service teams that compete here and there. They are not teams like you have in the Navy, AF, or Army.

JJack
What kind of sport are you talking about???
That sounds pretty ridiculous.
Recruiters will say anything to get people signed up.
I'm all for military service but make sure your boyfriend signs up for the right reasons.

That's ludicrous. The recruiter is desperate and lying. You don't join the Marines to play football or to compete in badminton.

One of the Marines I served with is infantry and was an amazing wrestler and could have gone to college to wrestle but joined the Marine because he wanted to be infantry. While in the Marines he wrestled for the Marines but was only gone a year. The Marines only have a very very very few people that ever do a sport. The only reason I know that we even had a few guys play sports was because of this Marine. I don't know who he wrestled or anything like that. But its pretty much bull sh!+. Don't listen to him. But the benefits he would receive if yall got married would be great! Trust me he is pretty safe. We loose a very small amount of people in combat. He can always pick a desk job, those are a lot safer or join another branch and find something even safe yet. If he wants to be a Marine and really wants it I would say let him because I left a very serious relationship when she said know and know several others that did the same. a couple even got a divorce. If you know its a dream of his or something on those lines be careful about how you tell him you don'twant him to join....just a suggestion.

He would be considered a single parent if you have a child, so therefore he has to sign over all rights to the child before he can enlist. If you are not married you cannot be together, you will not get any benefits at all.

He cannot have it put into his contract that he will be on a sports team, he cannot have it put into his contract that he will not be deployed. For teams they do have to try out and be chosen. There is no guarantee that he will not go to Iraq, Afghanistan, Djibouti or anywhere else he is needed and his unit deploys to.

not even remotely true.. for one his job takes priority,, ALWAYS he may not even be ALLOWED to try out for the All Marine Team of choice.

You mean like Elvis getting out of combat because he was an entertainer?

Um, no.

I don't know if that part is true, however, I would like to clarify, genius Lava dog, that the Marine Corps plays on navy teams.

You have to do whatever they want you to do. Once you sign on the dotted line you are a GI. You no longer have free will. Trust me I know.

you need to support him. let him do what he wants, he's fighting for our country [yea i know it's going to be hard esp with a child, but you're not alone...i have a brother who is in the Marines and a boyfriend at basic for the Air Force right now] but no i have never heard of sports in the military before...ive heard of it for military school but never in the actually military. if he's in the military, chances are he'll get deployed but it doesn't mean that he'll get deployed right after he finishes all his training. don't worry.

jrceja21
the marines dont have ny sports programs as far as i know. with that being said it doesnt matter what branch or what sport youre in or how good you are at it, you primary job is to go to war to defend our country.

either way its good for your family as you get compensated well with benefits housing and pay. remember wars are not fought now like they were. we rely so much now on air and naval power and intel. yes there is a chance he could be a causality but he could also be taken out driving to work or choke on a taco or be mugged. trust me though if its what he wants let him know where you stand but dont hold him back or he may always regret what could have been.

Lizzy
nope it is true if he is on a sports team he will never see combat
let him join it is a good idea
