If you sign to be on a sub is it longer??

my uncle works for the navy and goes for 4 months but it could be up to 6

Any position in the navy is likely to have you at sea for 4 months or longer. Something to consider before joining that branch. If you're single and like to be at sea it's great, but if you're married or in a relationship it can be very hard. I spent 4 years in the army so I have no personal experience, but my neighbor's sister is in the Navy and that's one of the harder parts for her.

could be 9 months to a 12 months.... It all depends on what is going on around the world.

I was at sea for 12 months during the first Gulf War.

It depends on what job you're taking within the navy - but typically yes.

It can be longer. But on average, it's 6 months in, 6 months out.

And that's not all jobs. Some Navy jobs don't put you on a sub at all.

Yup. It's called "Sea Duty" and when you're on Sea Duty you go on "Cruises" only these aren't for pleasure! The cruise can last UP TO 9 months, depending on the needs of the Navy. You will get the opportunity to go ashore when you pull into a port, but most of your time will be at sea, doing whatever job it is that the Navy requires.

If you are on a submarine, their cruises last just as long since they are generally assigned to a task force as protection for the fleet.

If you are on a ballistic missile sub (I think they are all out of commission right now), you spend 3 months at sea, underwater, and 3 months in port, with two crews for the same sub so that the sub is ALWAYS at sea.

There are also submarines stationed at various parts of the world to keep track of Russian and Chinese naval operations. The subs are home-ported at a certain place and they rotate crew members instead of returning the sub to the States.

Mrsjvb
yes. and the possibility does exist for longer deployments. Sub and Surface.

After working on Navy Ships, Boilermaker, found out there were two Navies, one shore the other sea and which ever one your in you usually stay there for the rest of your carrear.

Here's the kicker: You might be out of CONUS for six months, but you usually hit ports along the way, UNLESS you're in a sub. They can be deployed longer, and today's sub fleet is increasingly nuclear powered, so they don't need to replenish anything but food stores.

Did anyone really read the question? IS ANYONE HERE ACTUALLY IN THE NAVY?!!
It depends on what job you have, you can be a nuclear operator and do a 6 month deployment which may turn into a 9 month deployment if conditions are bad in your area of operation...You can be a seabee and NEVER set foot on a ship....... you can be an aviation mechanic (AD) and be attached to a P3 squadron and work on a Naval Air Station once again never seeing a ship.......you can be a SEAL and only see ships or subs on missions........you can be a sub guy and be on "boomers" which do 3 months in 3 months out or fast attack subs and do 6 month deployments. It all depends on your rate (job) AND what unit you are attached to. The Navy has this stigma attached to it that all you can do is go on a ship out to sea and that is very far from the truth. Just wanted to put this out there, no offense to anyone here in the Navy but MOST of the answers here give the wrong impression.

It's not a mission, it is called a "detachment". The estimate time is around 6 months.
You vary between shore duty and sea duty.

If you do go subs, from my husbands understanding, you will be looking at 3 months out, 3 months in most of the time.

We've been married for 2 years, and he's only been on a ship for two weeks, but he's a mechanic. He's switching to sea duty this weekend though, and we've heard that his new squadron does 2 months in, 2 months out, but I guess we'll see.

Good luck. If you have any more questions, please post them and I will look out for them. Those recruiters lie out the wazoo to get you to join. Don't believe a thing that they tell you, and if you join, make copies of everything that you sign. ESPECIALLY if you are supposed to go in at a higher rate, they like to convenient "lose" those, and if you don't have proof, you'll be a lower pay grade. They did that to my husband, and he's now finally at the pay grade he should have had for the last two years.
Good luck!

TheGoods is right. Very right. Even though we might see what we see as far as our enlistment as military personel/family the truth is that they do with you what they want.

I already mentioned that my hubby is in school before moving to sea duty...
Anyways, a classmate of his was just yesterday ordered to serve another year of duty.
This CAN happen, I don't know exactly how legally, but it can and DOES happen quite frequently.
My point... don't join the navy if you have you're own life plan, because... trust me.......... they will **** it up.

depends which navy?
