IPOD/MP3 during PT Test?

IPOD/MP3 during PT Test?

As a USAF PTL (Physical Training Leader) and UFPM (Unit Fitness Program Manager), I recently found out from an Army PTL that their branch doesn't allow the use of an iPOD or MP3 during their official PT Test. I was also told that the nor does the Marines or Navy allow it. Is this true?
Additional Details
I understand that its not part of the uniform, and in AFI 36-2903 "Dress and Appearance" our PT gear is labeled as a uniform as well.

I am with usaf brat - i have seen it authorized on specific tracks at specific bases. I've also seen it used during PT tests, but not full scale unit PT tests... more like "hey, you three guys are going to school so we need a current diagnostic, oh you have your iPods? who cares..." kind of thing.

Not allowed. Not part of the uniform. And yes, your PT gear is a uniform

In the Army you cannot use it for the APFT or at regular PT, but we use them at the gym.

It even varies in the AF from base to base. On our current base it was not allowed until last year. The base commander approved it for those that do their run on the base track. Prior to this no one was allowed to wear iPods or MP3's while running, especially if on perimeter road.

It is ultimately a base CC decision.

It is not considered PT gear either. Two reasons, there is one uniform and one standard at Army formations (and from the time I was stationed with them, I believe the Navy is even more strict about tradition and drill and ceremony); second reason is safety, Soldiers can only wear headphones inside the gym because you cannot hear a car driving up behind you while doing PT if you have headphones blocking your ears.

Navy doesn't allow the use of an ipod due to safety reasons, however I know of CFL's that will allow them for indoor PRT. (ie the treadmill/elliptical option)

um its a gray area. in the gym you can, outside you cant though. well your nto supposed to, doesnt mean that there arent times when you can get away with it
