1. They were arrogant enough to underestimate the patriotism the Vietnamese felt to be free of foreign control. Same thing happened in Iraq.

2. We didn't use their methods of fighting, we used ours which clashed with the jungle / swamp areas that the war was fought in.

3. Our oppression of minority groups back in this country hurt our credibility--especially when we claimed that we were working for the Vietnamese people's best interests.

4. The presidents refused to listen to their advisers on how best to proceed in the region. Sort of like how Bush ignored what his advisers told him: The enemy would use land mines to hit soldiers on the ground, they would use guerilla warfare, they would use suicide bombers...yes even presidents lack intelligence!

5. We joined the war at the side of France at first...they were using imperialistic tactics--dominating another country--something the U.S. is against. It divided the nation, just like the war in Iraq.

6. Vietnamese volunteered to fight against the US while some Americans were drafted. Those who don't choose to fight, will be the first to abandon ship at the first sign of trouble.

7. We went against the wishes of the people and imposed a dictator on them and tried to force freedom down their throats...just like in Iraq.

8. Diseases such as malaria increased the difficulties faced.

America has the best weapons including high-tech bombs, effective strategies, etc. However, we are often divided on whether the war is right or wrong, we are often arrogant in our views of seemingly "weaker" or "smaller" nations and we sometimes ignore the advice of people with knowledge of the region's politics, strategies, leaders, past actions, etc.

It only lost the political war, not the military. Read a book.

Because politicians mico managed the operation.

The United States Military is indeed the strongest military in the world. The problems it faced in Vietnam were many. 1st the combat styles that we were using were outdated, even though it had bee suggested that we change even before we went in. 2nd is the fact that the first engagement that the US was in was in a place called Dien Bien Fu. This was the same place where the French Foreign Legion had their butts handed to them. We fought the same way they did. We got our butts handed to us. 3rd is the fact that allot of the nationals did not want us there. If you do not have the support of the people, then it makes your job harder. 4th was the terrain and weather that we were not equipped to handle. 5th was the fact that a vast majority of the troops did not want to be there, being drafted. There are more reasons, but this gives a pretty good counting.

The people wanted "Uncle Ho" and did NOT want the puppet government we installed.

AD
We didn't. The military is required by the Constitution to obey the orders of the civilian leadership of the country and they ordered us to pull out because it became unpopular to stay.

You ask a lot of questions in the military section; plan on joining anytime soon or do you just like to troll?

because they weren't allowed to fight it as a war...

you can not win a war by HOLDING land.. you win a war by going to were your enemy lives and shooting them till they stop moving.

that is why Vietnam is NOT actually referred to as a war.. but instead os a "Police action"

A. There was no Vietnam War. No war was ever declared. The U.S. did not lose any major battles in Vietnam, but the pull out of forces brought the end of the U.S. supported South Vietnam.

Its amazing how Americans can change history to suit their own beliefs - no war in vietnam indeed.

The war was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other member nations of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO).

The United States entered the war to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam as part of a wider strategy called containment.

In the post-war era, Americans struggled to absorb the lessons of the military intervention. As General Maxwell Taylor, one of the principal architects of the war, noted "first, we didn't know ourselves. We thought that we were going into another Korean war, but this was a different country. Secondly, we didn't know our South Vietnamese allies … And we knew less about North Vietnam. Who was Ho Chi Minh? Nobody really knew. So, until we know the enemy and know our allies and know ourselves, we'd better keep out of this kind of dirty business. It's very dangerous.

Almost 3 million Americans served in Vietnam. Between 1965 and 1973, the United States spent $120 billion on the war ($700 billion in 2007 dollars). This resulted in a large federal budget deficit. The war demonstrated that no power, not even a superpower, has unlimited strength and resources. But perhaps most significantly, the Vietnam War illustrated that political will, as much as material might, is a decisive factor in the outcome of conflicts.

THE UNITED STATES DID NOT LOSE THE WAR IN VIETNAM, THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE DID .
The fall of Saigon happened 30 April 1975, two years AFTER the American military left Vietnam. The last American troops departed in their entirety 29 March 1973.

The military didn't lose the war, the press, politicians and hippies did.

Vietnam was not actually a Military venture but a political one, as was Korea. The purpose of the military is kill people and destroy property in order to eliminate a nations ability to make war. In Nam, as in Iraq, we weren't trying to do that, we were trying to put a government of our choice in power against the wishes of the people there. Nation building is not the function of the military, and using it for that purpose is a guaranteed losing proposition, so having the strongest military means nothing if the civilian government doesn't know how and when to use it.

Vietnam wasn't a military defeat it was a political defeat.

Because by design the Vietnam war was to put money in certain peoples pockets at the cost of many fine Americans.
These people who kept us in there had no intention of a win, wealth was their only goal.
Thumbs down all you want I spent 26 months in that hell hole .I know what went on there.

America won the Battles but lost the war because of politics, citizens weren't behind and they were afraid to take casualties..:!!!

We won ever single battle of the Vietnam War... it wasn't a military loss, it was our politicians pulling us out and leaving South Vietnam at the mercy of the communists... unfortunately the communists had no mercy.

CS you really need to get out more and read some books.

I love it when insults are tossed in the form of a question.

They weren't fighting a regular army. Constant sabotage at home didn't help.

We have been through this already today.

Did not lose Congress Gave Up!!

Added: who ever is giving thumbs down for this answer has not read any American History. I lived on base during the war, so I Grew up while history WAS being made. Congress decided to pull out Of Vietnam, We Do Not know whether we would have won or not because of these Pansy @SS
congressmen. Politicians need to leave warfare to the Military and keep their chick$hit nosies out of it!

Why should I read about something I lived?

There was no support at all for the returning troops. They were attacked by gangs and spat on. Why should they give their all for a bunch of uninformed protesters?

Talk to the Politicians why we lost the Vietnam war. We won ever major military operation.

socrates
Because the U.S. military is a very blunt and violent instrument that causes more problems than it solves. Someday everyone, even the richest of the rich, will admit that we can never kill our way to peace.

I love the good ol' U.S.A.!!
Congress never declared war and it wasn't our war to begin with, we just supported south Vietnam. The soldiers didn't lose the war congress did because they lost patients.
You need to learn the difference between a conflict and a full scale war declared by congress. Maybe you need to take some history or American government classes. Do you have any plans to join the military? Maybe you should so you can know what its like when people think you failed even though you really won. Politics are the blame for the problems that Vietnam Veterans face in todays society.

we pulled out if we really wanted to win we could have. Although the cost of lives was greatly underestimated and we didnt want to lose any more of our men

The democratic congress withdrew funding - apparently, considering their efforts to do the same in Iraq, they aren't very big on history.

The politicians lost the war, not the military. God Bless you.

Militarily, we didn't lose. One of the main goals was to stop the spread of Communism in Southeast Asia and we did that.

Between the liberal press and the anti-war movement, we did lose the war of public opinion.

Ed F
We did not lose the Vietnam War, in fact we won every battle fought in Vietnam over the ten years we were there. We elected to leave after losing 58,000 soldiers while North Vietnam was willing to lose
10,000,000.
We lost at home, not in Vietnam.

yo
small arms, against bombers fighters aircraft cariers and the latest war machines the dollar could make. paid for by you and me, and we could not wait to go and kill like on tv
