If I joined the Army as a regular, could I make officer through experience and by excelling??

If I stood out and excelled could I become an officer if I joined up as a regular soldier, as I dont have the right qualifications and being nearly thirty dont have the time to go back and do all my GCSE's?
Additional Details
To expand it would be the British Army, well Royal Marines if it makes a difference?

Yes, indeed.

Take classes after you get in, get a degree and apply for a commission.

My husband is in the army, and he has a best friend who joined the army with no qualications at all, well over the years he worked his way up, he is now a officer!
All he did was do every course in the army going, and work hard to gain a exellent rep in the army,he was then picked to be a officer-the training is hard but worth it.
I wish you good luck .
My husband use to train the recuites and one thing i would say is prepare your self to be around young lads as they are normally between the ages of18-25,even tho you are nearly 30 you will be treated exaclty the same but they will prob look at you with a little bit more respect.

I'm not sure where you are but here you can. My brother joined the air force as an avionic technician and is now just doing his last exam to be an officer. After working as a tech for several years, he applied (at 29-30 yrs old) to join the officers school (sorry, no idea what it's called). Once accepted, he went through basic training type scenario again but for officers and has now just completed 4 years of university, paid for by the defence force.

Good luck!

Yes, indeed you can. You have to join up as a regular recruit, work your way up through the ranks and then apply for the commission once you've reached Warrant Officer Class 1 (7 or 8 rungs up ladder I think)! As you go through all your promotions the Army will put you on the relevant courses to progress. Good luck!

It is a rare military organization that does not seek leadership talent wherever it can find it. I know that the US and UK military have programs to produce Mustangs (officers who started as enlisted)

I'm 22 yrs, very athletic, some say I'm not very smart ,but I'm not really sure also on what to do with my life,I've always wanted to Graduate from College, preferable Computer Engineering, however,I've be considering the cost, the time and the Marines are giving out $50,000 once I sign up, that alone covers my 4yrs college ,these is gonna be quite a short cut for my success, and a chance to serve my country with pride and also to proof to my friends that are currently flipping burgers part time to pay for college, that I maybe a success too, instead of wasting time honing my skills and developing my self just like any average Joe,aint got no time for college now,I gonna be provided for,I'm gonna get hands-on training in the field of my profession, plus other numerous benefits & promises ;Job Training,Home loans/grants, and assistance needed once I return,so that I need not pan handle at street corners, nor abandone by my love ones, That is why I'm desperately thinking of joining the Marines ,and I've already mentally prepared myself for what can become of me,I know a lot have changed ,great improvements reported ,I know for sure my training is gonna be on a fast track, maybe 3 months or less that is why, I enjoy watching these HBO documentary getting fired up for the purple and the life ahead ( If I'll Survive) any final thoughts ? http://www.hbo.com/aliveday/

The army used to have extensive self-paced correspondence courses that you could take in your....spare....time. These days I imagine opportunities to advance are improving due to attrition resulting from repeated deployments to Iraq. But I can't help but ask if you're really ready to commit yourself to spending the greater part of the next 5 years or so, in Iraq. I don't say this lightly or disrespectfully; the sacrifices of American servicemen and women has been remarkable, especially in contrast to the careless blundering of several high-level Administration officials. But my bottom-line concern is that we are going to see a wave of Iraqi war vets with all kinds of injuries, physical and psychological, and I'm not at all optimistic that we as a nation will provide them the help they need, and are owed. The conditions in the long-term care annex at Walter Reid Hospital are just the tip of the iceberg, and it's going to get worse. As we begin to "draw-down" (i.e.: pull-out) our troops, we the people will likely do what we did in Vietnam, what we do best: forget about it. In the process, we'll also forget about our obligations to the brave men and women who've sacrificed everything from their piece of mind, to their limbs to fulfill their obligations to US.

Good luck to you whatever you decide to do. If you should decide to join-up, may the Army, and may our nation, honor your sacrifice and remember our obligation to provide decent medical and psychological care for as long as you need it.

I did it as a US Marine; I worked alongside Brits who had done it as well.

The US and UK military are still great places to get ahead based on hard work and ability.

Right up until you make Colonel then it ids all political

Depends what core you join......Be a pilot
YOU have to move up rank to fly..........most of the others you will move slowly,no matter what they say to you, make your intentions clear to them from the start.

Basing it on the way that the Navy promotes people, it is possible to promote a rating up to officer hood, but you have to have the right material for that. I have been in the Navy for five years I have known up to ten people want to go for officer hood, but only three have succeeded.

If you feel that you have the right metal for it then go for it.

gillm
yes you could - good luck and look after yourself matey .

What you are talking about doesn't happen and the closest thing would be a battlefield commission, which hasn't happened in years.

The AF has several programs that may allow an enlisted to work for a commission. It deals with created a package, a screening process, military needs, leadership recommendation, etc...it is not the easiest process.

elvis_liveonstage
Defiantly, if you stand out during recruitment you will be offered the position of "officer cadet".

Yes you can, if you show excellent leadership abilities, obtain a wealth of experience and excel in pretty much every thing you do you may find your-self fast tracked to promotion.

The Royal Marines (part of the Navy NOT the Army) are renowned for promoting from the ranks, although you must also be patient to be promoted from Marine to Lieutenant can be quick if your made of "the right stuff" but will most probably take you 15+ years.

Good luck

I believe that was a thing of the past. No doubt many years ago you could become an officer by excelling as an enlisted member. Though nowadays you must have the proper degree and such to become an officer.

Edit: Jenlouise, are you sure that he isn't just a warrant officer and not an actual officer?
