Would I have time to get both my private Helicopter and Airplane license? On maybe Weekends and time off. I was thinking that if some people on Active duty can go to collage, why can't I do that.

The other answers here seem to indicate that your time will be 100% USMC; this is close, but it won't be quite that harsh.
Your first months in the military will be hell-ish. You won't have much personal time, and when you do get some you won't be in any condition to study for aviation licensing.
However, the military does value educated soldiers. They will pay big bucks to send you to college, flight school, etc. But, you'll be doing all of this on your own time. This can be tough/impossible if you're in Iraq. You can expect to deploy somewhere overseas into combat immediately after boot camp. As a result, your aviation plans will probably have to wait a couple of years.
If you're looking to become a serious pilot, the time and money commitment is huge. If so, you should probably focus on either planes or helos, not both. If you only want some time, experience, private license, then go ahead and get both helos and planes. |

The other guy is semi correct. Your time belongs 100% to the military. They have first dibs on your time, but you do get time off. Evenings and weekends are mostly yours to do what you want (within reason) but if they need you to do some sort of duty or mission requires you to stay longer... you will stay longer.
I know of people that got their scuba diver certification while on active duty. |

I knew a marine who got his pilot's license when I was stationed on Okinawa. We were both on an air force base doing shore duty though. You get put in a unit that does a lot of time at sea or running around the middle east, it probably won't happen, but if you get some shore duty somewhere, you should be able to do it. |

Why don't you just go to college, work on your pilot license and be a Reserve?
Is that too hard? What is your priority? If you think you are going to use my beloved Corps as just a job so you can pay for your real loves, you have a very rude awakening. Thou shalt have no other priorities besides the Corps! If you do, go some other route. |

Your life will be 100% (we'll mines too since were both joining) by the USMC. Our time, effort, and everything will be USMC. Marines recruiter told me " If you want free time, you should have went army) I dont know if thats a good thing or bad. Mabey I'lll transfer over after 4 years :-) Good Luck~ |
