If i want to go into the national guard?

I have some questions.. if i go sign up what happens next boot camp right? then what? What are the chances of being blown to bits, i really am not scared of dying, just want to be around for my son, any info you can give would be helpful thanks =) Maybe I should join the marines because its a shorter term to serve but then thats more of a chance of going into direct combat so soon.. confused =/
if you dont have children please dont judge me on anything im saying ,you would never understand.. Additional Details If your going to be deplyed how long before do they notify you??

I served 4 years in the Marine Corps, and I have worked with all the branches...
Besides training scheduels and branch attitudes I understand it to be that they are all roughly the same (except the coast guard: but youd be surprised how often those guys go and put their neck out on the line - theres some dangerous work)
It all depends on Your MOS, if you get a good enough recruiter who can guarantee you a job, that prevents you from going to combat (if thats your intent) then they will be the best to help you with that. I cant honestly tell you where you would go in either case because I dont know your ASVAB scores or physical shape or intentions really.
But the military is a great choice for just about anybody, the bennefits are hard to beat. But on family life it was tough... maybe you will be tougher then me, I ended up divorced... bad example but its common. Ive heard of lots of resentment towards parents, and Ive heard of very proud loving and supporting children - it all depends on how your child percieves your service time.
There is a very seldom chance of you getting killed, but the day you swear in to the very moment you deploy those people who are in charge of seeing the best for your welfare and the welfare of your family will constantly remind you the possability is always just at the door.
Its the sacrafice so many have made, and so many will. Its how we have our freedom, and you will see in this day of equality... its not just childless men fighting these wars... single mother are out there earning our freedom as well..
Its something I would discuss with my family, and talk about with god, its a decision that will be something that changes you forever, for the better and for the worse... its what your wanting to put in to it.
Boot camp is difficult for all branches its isolation, and loss of a life you once lived, its stepping outside of your comfort zone to become a useful tool of the United States of America. You will experience pain, sadness, and challenge...
Its not for everybody....
Good luck girl, I wish you the best in your decisions. |

Compared to just joining the Army, the main difference in the NG is that you need a job between deployments.
You should either join intending to be deployed and willing to be separated from your family for extended periods or stay the hell out.
Stay in your State? That was before the 90s administration decimated the military. MOST of our combat units are NG now. My unit (formerly - heart trouble) has been to Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan since 2002. Between that we even went overseas for training. |

the chances of you going into direct combat are slim to none. Depending on what state you live in is mainly where you will serve.
Yes you will have to do ten weeks of basic training and depending on your job in the national guard you go to training for that afterwards for about another month.
I would go with longer term and stay at home. Then shorter term into direct combat. |

i have friends killed in iraq. thats disrepetful to say blown to bits.
now thats taken care of,
you go to MEPs, that physical and drug testing, if your good to go no waviers, you enlist that day. they tell you when your shipping out for training, its within 10-30 days. mine ws 18 days after signing. from there you go to hell on earth, basic training, its what you make out of it, be a soldier for the soldiers, and you will enjoy it so much more. then ait, where you learn your job. now, your a woman, you will not see combat, any combat arms jobs, are closed for you. so the disrectful comment made earlier, wont happen. you join the guard your only going to make drill pay, what i make in a day, is what you wil make, you wont make 30,000 a year, more like 1500. if you go national guard, your wasting your time, wont get any perks, and you will grow to hate the service. i walked in a recruiters wanting to do reserves, good thing it was active duty only, best choice i made my whole life! i get everything free, and dont pay a cent. except for civilan clothes. |
