I dont plan on becoming an officer in the Marines because I would like to give recon a try and it is much harder for officers to get sent to the training then enlisted Marines. So... should i go to college before the Marines or after

i dont want to change my mind. All i want to do is be a Marine. Then when i get out i want to be a private contractor or do something like that that i can get money for

I would encourage you to join the Marines, fulfill some of the dreams you've already set-forth and then think about college.
First, if you really like the Marines you could always stay in and go to college while Active Duty. Or, you could find that you do want to become an officer in the Marines and let the Marines send you to college. Lastly, if you decide to serve your enlistment and then leave you would have the GI Bill to assist you in college payments. |

be a marine first. if you don't wanna be an officer whats the point of going to college first? and by joining the military first you can use the GI bill to pay for college which is a lot better than being 20 g's in debt in a horrible economy. |

Dude go to college first, im 16 and i want to be a USAF Combat Controller, i would like to go to college 1st but if i cant i will just go in once im 18, and what do you mean by recon? do you mean Force Recon or Just Recon? because if its Force Recon you should know that it has now turned into MARSOC which is now officially the USMCs only special operations unit, either way good luck, maybe ill will see you out there one day... |

I am assuming your a high school student. I don't mean to be a spoil sport, but joining force recon is very hard. they have a very high washout rate. you can consider it if you are the following:
play a major sport in school now (football or basketball)
consider yourself a very good swimmer
make good grades in school
In addition, to become a officer in any branch, you have to have a college degree. to become a marine officer, you have to be chosen, marine officers come from the naval academy |
