If my husband gets a medical discharge from the army do we lose our tricare insurance?

If he is Discharged for Medical reasons, No such thing as a Medical Discharge, you would no longer have any benefits from the Military.
He could apply to the VA for Disability payments and receive care from the VA for the problem that lead to being separated.
If he is Medically Retired, then he and his dependents would still receive full benefits.

yes you do unless your husband gets over 50% disability. Even then you loose Tricare and have to deal with medical through the VA.

Depending on his rating you could still be covered but it is not free anymore. If you want to stay on Prime you will be expected to pay a Annual Enrollment Fee and co pays as needed.

ETA: I'm just curious but has your husband gone to the MMRB yet or are they sending him directly to a PEB?

To Tyro..... We recently went through a situation where my husband had to go before a med board , the one person told him that he would be sent on to a PEB and be removed from service. Thankfully that person was wrong and he was re-classed and sent to another MOS. Before he went to the MMRB just to get all the info we could we called Tricare and ASK THEM what we (the children and I) would get should he be medically retired I want to stress MEDICALLY RETIRED

There are MAJOR differences between what is given to those who ETS and those who are medically retired. That is why I stated depending on his rating.

When I contacted Tricare I was told that we COULD pay to have Prime if we wanted it and where willing to pay the Annual Enrollment Fee for a family and the co pays listed on the website for a retiree as that would technically be his status. I asked if it would effect his VA benefits and was told no and one would think that the actual Tricare people would be in the know above all others.

My suggestion to the asker is to contact Tricare once you actually know what is going on. The thing with med boards is that just because they are going to one doesn't mean they are going to be removed from service. We where also told that he would be removed and to prepare for the worst when he went to the board. When he actually went he wasn't sent on to a PEB and was told that he could re-class to another MOS. It really depends on the injury/condition and what the restrictions are. You'd be amazed what the enlisted Strength management can work out when it comes to getting someone who's on a profile re-classed.

yes. he will retain some VA coverage for himself, based on the reason he is being discharged.

if you going through the new des program through any servcie make sure you get everything written down ,even then its still a lot of crap they tell you ,ive been out over a year and the v.a still think im in the service even though ive turned in my dd214 3 times and filed claims i cant get a id card or pyments for disabilities
