If my husband would enlist in the military what are the chances he would go to war?

My husband is age 33 and was in ROTC in 1995, given a full-ride scholarship and ultimately turned it down. He is now thinking of enlisting again. We have four children under age five and I want to know if he were to enlist, what are his chances of being sent to Iraq? He thinks he wouldn't be sent, but I have my doubts. Once you sign, you are theirs to do with what they please, right?

Thanks!

100% like everyone else. They all have a chance. Whether or not he sees combat is another thing.

First off if your husband is unwilling to go to Iraq he should not enlist. Basic reason for this is that your job as s soldier places you between harm (the enemy) and the Nation. If you are unwilling to do this in the low threat environment of Iraq then service to country is not for you.

Almost 100% of the Army will cycle through Iraq in the next 3 years.

honey i don't mean to be rude but what do you think when you hear the word "military" do think guys sitting in little cubicles and working 9-5 jobs, no you don't , the military gets paid to defend and protect the country, my husband is over there right now and will be back next weekend, if he joins, just support him and be proud

He will be sent abroad

mr_crankypants
Very, very high. They recruiters cannot promise there is "little chance he will got to Iraq" in fact they are not legally allowed to comment on the likelyhood of deployment. The fact is that most enlistees go to Iraq.

Depends on what his job is really. You can be in the Air Force and be sent to war region, and never actually ever see any war or set foot off of base. Same with Navy and never set foot off the boat, except for R&R.

Army / Marines:
Is he combat arms or combat support. If combat support -most likely only during convoy duty, but otherwise he's on base (safe). Combat arms - then pray for him and let him know he makes his countrymen and family proud.

Simply put, is he a REMF or not?

Also, not every soldier is going to Iraq or Afghanistan, contrary to some of these wannabe-soldiers posting here. The US Military also needs to maintain troops in non-Combat bases, like Europe, Asia, and the US.

Safest bet is to stick him in the navy or air force in some lackluster but safe, base non-combat support job, where he might be able to send for his family.

If he goes Army, he WILL be sent.

It depends on his mos..(what job he gets and if they need that now.)

If its the Army or Marines, his chances are more likely than not that Iraq is in his immediate future. A lot will depend on what branch and what job he has. We need more information to help you out on this one.

Listen, it depends on the MOS he chooses. If he goes combat or combat support, he WILL serve in Iraq or Afganistan (lets not forget about that conflict). It just depends on the direction he chooses. Find out what he plans on doing and go from there. Don't let him go gung ho...don't let him! He has a family to keep in the forefront of his mind. There is a chance he could go to Iraq or Afganistan even if he is not combat or combat support related, but it all depends on the need. However, if he chooses a non-combat related MOS at least he will not be looking for the enemy. His chances of hostile contact in a non-combat related MOS are slim...still possible, but not as likely. Talk with him about EVERYTHING before he makes up his mind.

Take care.

sigh this is a common question on here its his job if he sign up for the military. no matter what his job is there is always a chance of going some jobs have less of a chance of deployment but the chance still stands

Missy21
He will go no doubt about it

Just me
It depends on what job. I have a friend who's husband is AF and does something with computers. He's only been 2 places, Mississippi and Texas. In 16 years he's only had to go on two TDY's, both were for 3 to 4 days.

At the same time, AF cops at the same base are gone every other 6 months. And another friend from the same base works services and was sent for 15 months.

Not all computer people will stay at there base. There are a lot of different areas of this, so some computer people do have to deploy as well.

There are some jobs that are only certain locations and people can only go to 2 or 3 bases and they stay at them their whole careers.

It is possible to get a job that does not deploy, but hard to find.

PS-- there is not a limit to how any dependents you can have. I know people who have 10 kids and a wife. In fact there are 5 families I know of off the top of my head that each have 6 to 10 kids. Now, it doesn't mean you'll get a house that has more rooms. The one family I know with 10 kids is only enlisted, and the max rooms at our base for enlisted is 4 rooms total. But they make it work, don't know how, the houses are not that big.

100%. EVERYONE has the potential to deploy, regardless of Branch and job specialty.

and Iraq isn't the only hot spot. Afganistan, Darfur, Somalia, Haiti, to name just a few.

but in all honesty: his chances of being allowed to join are about NIl. he has too many dependants. you plus 4 kids: five ,and the limit is three

Knight-of-God
I am thirtty and getting ready to enlist in the army. Depending on his MOS and such the chances are 50-50. A lot of the guys are being sent to Korea right now.

Depends on his MOS, but keep in mind that soldiers are doing two/three tours to Iraq so his chances of going are very good. Good Luck

There's a very high chance he'll go. If he wants to join, you should support him. He's fighting for you too. It's not an easy job being a military wife/spouse, but it's so worth supporting your husband and the cause.

Iraq.

Roadrunner58-79
I don't think the US Military will let anyone enlist
with 4 children under the age of 5, but if by chance they would allow him to enlist, there is a 50/50 possibility that the could go to a combat
area.

It depends on what is job is if he's infantry or something like that then most likely he will but if he's like a desk jockey for a general, he wouldn't be because generals don't give up their desk jockeys very easy. And bored at work's answer is a bad one not everybody goes to Iraq that was a lame answer that he/she didn't research he might not even go! and no we won't be there for 10 years he/she doesn't know that unless your physcic.

A good chance. Why would he want to? Did he go to college? Does he have a job? He needs to care for his family.

my aunt was sent to Iraq, but it all depends on what branch and what his job would be. an infantry man would go before a chef would. you would have to talk to a recruiter, not just one but most of the different branches recruiters, to get better information
