Thye answer is actually contrary to what the "War for Oil" types want to believe, but it's true and historically it's accurate.
The reason we are building permannent bases is.....For the Iraqi Army/Air Force!!!!
Listen up naysayers! We did the EXACT same thing in Saudi, Kuwait, and Qatar!!!!!!
In Saudi Arabia the US payed for PSAB(both FFHC and the Operational side) to be built up with the full intention that when we broke camp, the buildings, A/C shelters and housing would be given to the Saudi Government for use by thier military. When we eventually shifted CENTAF operations we handed over the keys willingly as underlined in the original agreement.
It's a good faith thing.
For allowing us to use thier land we make a good gesture to them by building up thier bases for thier use.
Plain...Simple... and a good strategy.
Since we are building up Iraq's Army and eventually thier AF they're gonna need a place to stay. We provide it for them and in return have thier support.
P.S. The freaky thing is that FFHC at PSAB was built by...wait for it... The Bin Laden group! Actually most of his family hates him, regularly belittles his twisted views of Islam(even going so far as to call him a traitor to the religion) and disowned him. The folks who run the Saudi construction company were the first to do so and to punctuate thier point became staunch supportes and allies of the US.
Funny, but some of our most valuable friends are folks that he used to call kin! |

in my opinion we are going to be there for a while.... and speaking as a wife of a deployed soldier and knowing how my husband lives over there... i am all for the building of the bases..... currently there are many soldiers living in tents over there.... Tents.... how would you feel if you had to live in a tent for 6 months 12 months? |

well that's an easy one, we would build a permanant base ANYWHERE we possibly could. That's a foothold in that part of the world. We'll never completely be gone from there unless they kick us off our bases. We have bases all over the world. That's a good thing....we should be so lucky as to have one in every country.... |

Iraq is in the best location for US to keep an eye on the movements of terrorist and others that operate in that part of the world - every country that we have ever invaded has military presence so why should Iraq be any different. All the equipment that we have sent over has to be kept somewhere - no need to send it back here and then have to go back in 5 years or so. |

How long would you want to live in a tent? |

Whats the difference between a permanent base and a non permanent base ??
You expect people to live in tents ?
When they build base housing for the families, then you can tell me about a base being permanent.
Just because they have concrete buildings, don't make them permanent bases. |

Don't take the word "leave" literally you know.
you think we spend that much of money, that much of time and soldiers and now just leave?
no, we need something back, we need some values you know |

Because of several screwups here, one is that we didn't look for alternative energy sources 30 years ago...and other is putting an oil nut in charge of the country. We aren't likely to leave there until every last drop of oil is gone, then the vacuum created by our departure hopefully will not implode the whole country. |

Oil, this war was just an excuse to get the oil and to have the a place to "control" the middle east. |

I don't care for you much

Bush and oil most likely.. |

The US will leave after its stolen all the oil but that may take a long time so they need permanent bases. |
