If they reinstated the draft, could we win in Iraq?

Additional Details
I didn't expect all these really good answers. Thank you.

The draft will not help us win the war in Iraq, but it could quite possibly help our troops handle other mission critical needs both within the US and overseas. Right now our troop strength is very low and very over worked. Our leaders need to come up with a solution to help meet the demands currently in place and project resource demands for the future.

Our military success has nothing to do with a draft.

Our military successes are based on our leadership and our political will.

We have plenty of brave & unselfish people who are volunteering to serve our great nation. We have have more firepower & technology than anyone else. We can win any conflict we undertake as long as we have the correct leadership and will.

God Bless America

IMHO no. Whether we had half the people or four times the people, as long as they're standing around, waiting for someone to shoot at them or try to blow them up, we'll never get anywhere.

I believe as long as we're using soldiers as cops, security guards, and everything but soldiers, we'll continue to be in the same boat. Problem is the world loves to hate the US and if we fought a war like wars should be fought, we'd wind up fighting everyone, so instead we wind up tiptoeing around.

Numbers are not what we need to wins the war.

Well, personally, I don't think that's the issue. I mean, I think the surge, where we put in I think 25,000 more troops (not 100% sure on that number though) helped bring the violence down. And I mean, with that number of troops there, for the time being, with the new strategy, the violence is manageable. The hope was that the surge would reduce violence, (which it did) which would then pave the way to hasty political progress (which hasn't happened). I think "victory" in Iraq, best case scenario would be a relatively stable, self-sufficient democracy which could defend itself, and despite all of the efforts made, they really haven't made a lot of progress in the last few years unfortunately. I'm not sure how much of it is on the United States anymore. A lot of it is up to the Iraqis.

hopefully people will realize that modern warfare is not about numbers or even weapons. you have to win with brains, its a different type of fight.

The entire problem with the war is that we don't even have a definition for what "win" is. What would we have to do to win? If you mean kill every insurgent establish a single, unified democratic government, the answer is probably no. That will likely never happen.

However, if there was a draft, anti-war movements would gain a LOT more support, and we'd probably see a much swifter withdrawal of troops (like in Vietnam).

Hel* no! In this kind of war, there is no win or lose, it all depends on how you view the results. The best military is an all-volunteer military, the draft would be a mistake. What we need is more young people with the balls to stand up and fight for their country! This war isn't about oil! It's about taking down the dictators and the terrorist and trying to help other countries to have the same freedoms and rights that we, as americans, do! Remember, there is no winning in an unconventional war, the answer is up to the individual and his viewpoint.

It would not help in Iraq, But it sure would help out the country. As it stands now, it is the children of the poor, are doing all the fighting to keep the rich corporations rolling in record profits ( look at big oil and Haliburton) In year 2 of the war, Haliburton's profits were up 2000%. If the sons and daughters of the rich were drafted and had to fight, the only wars fought would be those that affected our nations freedoms and independence. As it is now, the wars for profit are taking a toll on the poor , while the rich are raking in the cash and the next little for profit war will be just around the corner . When some one cripes about the high profits of the oil companies the defenders of the oil companies will say
"Hey, thats what captilism is all about , making all the profit that the market will bear. Evidently it is also about creating a war to make those profits soar. We have a sick system of government. Let's kick them all out and start over.

NO

Didn't work in Vietnam.

Some of these countries have been fighting for as long as we have recorded history.

We must have some ego to think we could just walk in, do what we were going to do, and be successful.

Honestly I believe there is only one solution and that solution would mean the end of the world as we know it.

It didn't seem to work in Vietnam. Gorilla warfare gives the advantage to the country being occupied.

Win WHAT?! This right to invade, occupy, and retain our staus as cops of the world? What's that done to protect our economic and domestic interests?...gotta go now, so I can go shell out $4.15 a gallon for some California gasoline!

you have to understand that it's NOT about winning, its about setting up permanent bases in the middle east to ultimately take over the oil fields... peak oil is or will be happening very soon and the US government knows that and has no real answer for it.. so they will take over what is left of the oil.. think about it.. if oil is running out and it is our primary source of energy, dont you think there will be wars over whats left?

Marguerite
There's no winning to be had. As soon as we leave, chaos will ensue. Iraq has to sort itself out.

I know we would win a lot of resentment.

The First Dragon
They wouldn't have time to train the draftees in modern warfare before their time would be almost up and they'd have to train a new batch.
InReality's right. We can win if we choose to.

WAR? what war, there's no war in Iraq! The only thing going on there is Genocide. 30,000 +/- innocent iraqi men, women, and children. and 4,000 + of our own
