If they would allow it...cell phone, lap-top computer, sport car, masseuse, and a sock full of cash.

But of course, they aren't going to let me bring that. So, stick with an address book, stationary, stamps, home-made cookies, and memories of what it was like to be a civilian.

My husband brought more then 5 things.. but I'd say:

1. Cell Phone (they will lock it up, but you will get it half way though lik he did to use at night before lights out).
2. Black Sharpie (write your last name and last four digits of your social on EVERYTHING. A lot gets stolen).
3. Paper/Envelopes/Pen/Stamps.
4. Digital Watch (my husbands lifesaver, set to military time).
5. Calling Cards (you dont get your cell at first have you have to use the payphones when they give you time for personal calls).

Dont forget birth certificates, marriage license and stuff like that. A debit card and/or checkbook. You cant have more then $50 in cash on you.

Everything else you buy when you get there. They give you a card pre-loaded from an advance in your paycheck to get everything they need you to get.

Make sure you bring or buy a padlock with a combination code...not a key!!! If possible, get two that have the same combo. They are sold in a pack together.

Nothing... because no matter what you bring they will take it from you. The only personal item allowed is a wedding ring. Everything else will be put in a sack and kept until you finish boot camp.

When I went to Air Force BMT, there was this kid who brought along a whole suitcase full of stuff. Immediately off the bus, they lined us up into formation and started playing games with us. One of those games was to have up set our stuff on the ground and then have us pick it up again - many times in rapid succession. The kids arms got tired and they started ripping on him for not picking his sutcase up.

Whatever you take with you, make sure it's light and easy to move and does not sit too low on the ground. All you really need is a single change of clothes and a couple of twenties - no change. I would also bring something to eat and drink, but I would make sure I eat it and drink it all before you arrive - it can be a long trip.

I brought a small address book and ten bucks. That's it. Everything else, you either buy at the NEX (or whatever your branch calls it) or they issue to you.

You don't need much. :)
