There is a set of “laws” if you will in the military called the Uniform Code of Military Justice (also known as Title 10, Subtitle A, Part II, Chaper 47 of United States Code). Subchapter X lists the “punitive articles” that lists formal offenses with which military members can be charged. Getting caught in a “blanket party” would probably lead to a charge under Article 92: Failure to Obey an Order, Article 128: Assault, and possibly Article 134: General Article (the “catch all article”).

The severity of punishment would depend on the method of “trial” that is used. In the military, there are procedures for non-judicial punishment listed in Article 15 of the UCMJ. Article 15 proceedings are called Officer Hours (USMC) and Captain’s Mast (USN), USAF and USA have their own names. Though it is a criminal proceeding, you are not allowed council and the punishment is limited by the Manual for Courts Martial. Realize that those members in basic training are under UCMJ and members with less than 2 years service or so can be given administrative separations (not quite the same as a dishonorable discharge) for minor offenses. It is extremely unlikely that any prison time would be served unless the victim died or was severely injured in the attack.

As a recruit, you will probably be administratively separated and sent home with no permanent record, but unable to enlist again. On a side note, all branches have cracked down on the Full Metal Jacket-esque hazing.

Charged with assault and punished under UCMJ acording to the severity of the offence.

If you need to resort to a blanket party, then you lack problem solving skills. There are better ways to motivate people.

Yes, you can be discharged, and depending how good the writer of the Article 15 is it could be dishonorable. Its considered a form of hazing, which by military standards is wrong. In basic it could be an automatic outing.

Though my Drill Sgt. always said " Joe don't tell me about your blanket parties, I don't care, if he messed up, then he messed up. As far as I'm concerned he fell down the stairs. Accidents happen you know!"

You will be subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which will usually forgo the Article 15 and just go for the Courts Martial. You will be tried for assault and/or possibly attempted destruction of government property; If you are found guilty, you can face time in the stockade and possibly a discharge, ranging from Bad Conduct Discharge to Dishonorable Discharge. Better hope it's worth the risk.

I think you are watching too much Full Metal Jacket. Everybody beating on someone physically is quite, quite rare. People find other methods to let you know. But, you very well could be dishonorably discharged; it is up to the court martial. The armed forces look heavily down on physical contact with one another, especially in boot camp.

No, you'll be tossed (in the blanket).
