If you had to carry a self-defense weapon , what would be your choice?

A snub nose .38 caliber pistol. It may be a little pricey, but it is compact and easy to operate, I can see by your avatar that you are a woman, a snub nose .38 is small enough to fit in a purse, or inside a coat pocket.

I get asked that question ALOT!! I was a Combat Arms Instructor for about 8 years. It all depends if you are experienced with guns or not. For home protection, I would suggest a 12 gauge shotgun. Just the sound is EXTREMELY intimidating, plus, if someone breaks into your house in the night, you wake up all tired and confused, do you really think you are going to be able to see the assailant enough to accurately engage him/her? Plus, your senses are not going to be all there, I would rather point and shoot. Trust me, you're not gonna miss!! If you are experienced, the best "factory" man stopping round is 40 S&w. Just find a model you can handle and are comfortable with.

Speaking as a former cop, for ladies, I'd suggest that you check out a compact 9mm or a 380 caliber. Both are good mid-sized guns that has damn good "stopping" power. Plus, if you live in right to carry states, get a ccw.

Glock makes a good 357 compact that you can carry on you or in your purse.. BUT GUNS ARE NOT TOYS AND PEOPLE SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE CONSEQUENSES OF USING DEADLY FORCE. I DO NOT CONDONE ITS USE THAT IS A CHOICE YOU AND YOU ALONE HAVE TO MAKE.

what do you mean "had to carry"---here's what I currently have:
barbed wire fencing tool (just look it up and see)
a stainless steel corkscrew, sharpened
phillips head screwdriver (stubby handle)
bowie knife
and I think there's a weighted louisville slugger and a sawed off axe, too.

Now that's an awful lot for a girl's purse, so I highly recommend a purse-sized AEROSOL hair spray and a lighter. One blast of that, flic your bic and you have all day to call for help.

But seriously, what I would want to cary has not been invented yet, or perhaps simply not been perfected yet.

I would want to carry some sort of totally non-lethal stun weapon that could incapacitate a person, but do no lasting harm to them
