I would thank him for helping a young immature teenager become a man. |

Well, that happened to me. I met two of my drill instructors about 3 and a half years after Basic Training while I was at For Chaffee Arkansas (this was where JRTC use to be). There were two of them there and they were stationed there. I was an E-5 by then. They invited me back to their living area to watch a football game. The were happy that I had made E-5 already (this was hard to do back in the mid 80's).
I never went but it was nice for them to see me since I went up 4 ranks and they remained the same ranks.
But, you never know until it happens. |

I ran into one of mine in baghdad, i had to have his squad removed from the area so that my patrol could come through. I walked up to him and recognized him at once, he didn't at first but the look on his face was priceless when i told him he had to vacate the street and he realized it was one of his old trainees. I saw him later at the dfac and i said thanks for showing me the way and preparing me for combat. |

I meet one of my drill instructors 3 1/2 years later.
I out ranked him.
He didn't have a clue who i was, why should he, he saw so many recruits, no way he could remember. |

My RDCs were the best. They pushed me to do things I would have never done if I stayed home. I have seen my brother division's RDCs and they asked me how I had been and what I was up to and even congratulated me for getting married. |

I would shake his hand and tell him how great it was to see him. I never saw any body I was in boot camp with since the last day in boot camp. |

My Drill Sergeant from AIT bacame my neighbor a few years after I graduated. Our kids played together and we had barbeques on my patio.
It's a small world, and when they're done being Drill Sergeants you can see them as human again! |

I'd say, 'Thank you' and then I'd drop into the front-rest leaning postion and crank out a hundred out of respect and just for old-times sakes because I really mean it. |
