If you were given orders to rescue Captain Philips, what would your plan be?

I'd send in the SEAL team, and secretly attach a vial of acid to the lifeboat hull. The idea is to introduce a "deniable" leak, that will 1) divert attention 2) possibly sink the boat. Once in the water, the pirates are far more vulnerable to SEAL team members.

Direct assault is out since it's a COVERED lifeboat, and you can't see inside, thus, no snipers! Besides, who wants to shoot on a pitching see, when both the target and the shooting platform are moving? If you really want to assault the lifeboat, you can lob in a flashbang first, but in the close confines of the lifeboat you may kill someone when the banger goes off THAT close. You can try pepper gas grenades, but those don't quite act THAT fast. Sleeping gas is even slower.

No, I'd try to sink the boat covertly. We know captain Phillips can swim .The Somalis probably know how, but they can't be better at waterborne combat than our SEALs. We should have a much better chance saving captain Phillips if they're all in the water.

Id enter the water in underwater scuba gear. Instead of using air tank, i would use rebreathers to conceal the bubbles.

I would swim under the life boat, and use a tiny/long fiber optic camera to peak onto the boat, and then when i get a chance of opportunity, i would prop up on the boat, and take out the pirates, they would never see it coming.

or instead of shooting them, i would drop a flash bang in, and jump in the boat and disable the enemies, either by fire, or less than lethal weapons. and secure the captain

To rescue the Captain I would have snipers kill all the pirates on the boat at the same time, or when he jumped off the boat the other day I would have destroyed the boat.

I would kill everyone who committed an act of piracy with every asset available.

It is more important to kill pirates than to save hostages, by caring about hostages we encourage more piracy.

I'm not an expert at this of course, but.....they won't kill the captain coz then they are goners...what about the cranes they have on all military ships..why not hook up, pull up and deal with it...at least then they are going nowhere....

The Wise is on to something... the only problem is, every one knows, as Albert Einstein has proven like, 300 years ago, that you can't freeze time. However, a spell of holding, that would just freeze the people in the local vicinity... that has a good chance of working. It might be a good idea first, to use a scrying spell first, just to see where all the pirates are at.
Or we can wait till the movie comes out. See how they do it. And then copy them.

My plan would be this: teleport into the vessel and as soon as I am there use a spell to freeze everyone in the immediate vicinity. Then I'd take the priates weapons and grab the captain and teleport back to safety. By the time my time freeze spell wears off, they'd never knew what hit them!

That would leave the navy free to move in and arrest the pirates and I'd be the hero of the day!!

There are no good options -- the pirates 50 other hostages who would suffer if Philips were rescued.
