I say go. If you were ordered to go, you would have no choice. Once your enlistment is up, would you be able to travel? If not, take advantage of everything you can. I am a military mom with four kids in. One has returned from Iraq, one is there now, one is leaving for Afghanistan and one is hearing rumors about going. I would never try to stop my kids from doing what they want or feel they need to do (within reason). Go and enjoy your tour. Family and friends will get over it. Our daughter was in the Navy for 6 years and saw alot of the world.

You should go. Being away from your family is part of being in the military. Your 19, it's time to "leave the nest" and make your own life.

If you ever want to be strong enough to think for yourself, you'll go.

Well your 19, so your family really can't stop you, and as far as your friends not wanting you to leave, they can't stop you either. Korea isn't knowhere near as hostile as Iraq or Afghanistan, try telling your friends and family that it might help. But really its up to you.

Do what YOU want to do.
I went in the Army wanting to go to Germany, and I did. Loved my choice.
My friends are regretting not going when they had the chance and requesting being stationed stateside.

you are of a age where its time to live your life for yourself not for everyone else. do what makes you happy.

GO! I'm sure you've heard about what goes on in Korea anyway. Mid-tour with base of preference after. Plus, being somewhere besides america is nice. There's a lot of people that buy cell phones in Korea so they can call home. I have yahoo IM with voice services. It's like 1 cent a minute to the US. Travel as much as you can. Your family will get over it. I'm guessing you're already in the military, and I'm guessing your Air Force.

It's a million times better than going to Iraq for a year.

You should absolutely go! You're young and see what you can before you get married and have children. I'm not positive but during your career you'll have to serve at least one short tour. This tour to Korea will be it. I hear Korea is a blast if you're single! Great shopping too! Tell your family you joined the military and not being home is how it goes. I think you can come home once while you're over there. Take advantage of all you can see and do now!

I just love all the self proclaimed "military experts" that tell you all about what is going to happen if you join up. You can easily tell the difference between them and those who know 'cause they've been there.

I never wanted to go to Korea, it was one of the reasons that I got out. Back then, reenlistment meant a ticket to Korea.

However, I know a lot of people who've been there. Apparently, it is not so bad. There are a lot of exercises, but you should have time to take some classes, work out, or what ever. You also get midtour leave, so you can come home and visit half way through, or so.

It is also a way to get a base of preference. If you got stationed someplace you hate, put in for Korea. You get your base of preference for your follow on.

Do all of the travelling that you can while you're in. You will go and see places that most others will only dream of. Yes, you may end up going to Iraq or Afghanistan, but, after all, that is ultimately why we have a military. It is a risk that you take when you sign on the dotted line.

Don't let your family hold you back from what you want to do. Best of luck to you no matter what you decide to do.

I regretted not going overseas. I would try to get Germany or Italy though instead of Korea. Korea has curfews and big restrictions. My buddy is on a post over there and the CG banned booze! OMG BOOZE!

First, the tour in Korea is 13 months. Germany is 18 months.

If you have the chance for either post go for it.

I am sure you a little anxious to see the world but I can tell you that it won't be too late. With your military benefits, can you fly standby for very little money ? I would try to take a leave even if it is only for a one or two day trip to see/feel it before making a decision. It's easy to get "romantic" or feel the lure to travel but the reality is living someplace is even different from the experience. i would try before you buy if at all possible.

Don't go. Your family is right. These military people try to lure youngsters like you in deadly fights they do with free stuff like college money or travel chances. Have you ever seen politician or rich kid in military? If all youngers stop joining this nonsense, world will be a peaceful place.

Finish your studies, get a decent job, marry and have a nice family.

Boy, any Recriuter will always lie and tell you what they want you to hear.

If you want to see the world , then why not. But i would stay in my own country , because you can get in troulbe in other countries in 100 ways.

And if you join they will just send you to Iraq, the Front lines.
