Im 17, I want to join the Marines with a GED. I have family currently in, just fell behind in school.?

Ok so my dad deployed with the National Guard a few years back, came back and my parents divorced. Hard struggles since. Fell behind in school due to lack of "discipline" if you will. Minor troubles as a Juvenile currently getting off probation for misdemeanor crimes. My father as well as 2 of my uncles are former Marines. I have a cousin whom of which is currently in. I also have a friend with a GED who just joined the Marines due to Scores on the test (forgot what it is called) but most possible points is 60 and he scored 55 which is the highest anyone has scored in the state of Alaska (at least the highest this recruiter has seen) i plan to talk to a recruiter within a couple weeks just been busy working. I need help on this question so fill me in. I appreciate it if you do. Additional Details ok thanks for answering, now someone else go ahead and answer this question, what if i go through Military academy and get Military Credits?

this is how it was until recently, when enlistments soared because of the economy: "those without a high school education are ineligible. The Marine Corps limits GED enlistments to no more than five percent per year. Those with a GED must score a minimum of 50 on the AFQT to even be considered."
that's how it was. now, they have tightened up. even the army is tightening up on the GED enlistments. you will need some exceptional skill the they're looking for.
the ASVAB scores are made up of four different testing scores, so i don't know which one your friend scored 55 on. as an overall score, 55 would be pretty dam low. these scores determine your future MOS (job class). |

Your only chances at this point is a waiver or to go back and finish your diploma, and pass the ASVAB with a high score. Your juvenile record will matter if it has not been expunged from your adult record. Again you might get lucky and receive a waiver. It really depends on your recruiter and what they will allow or work with. If there are too many attempting to get in with a GED, your chances go down as there is a limit to the number of recruits they can accept with only a GED. |

I am also 17 and i'm about to join the navy. I am really surprised to hear that the highest anyone has scored in Alaska is 55. I live in chicago and I have seen people score up to 90 on their test. Well it seems like you dont have a clean record, so your chances of enlisting into the marines with a G.E.D are very slim. The military only consider people with G.E.D if they have a clean record. You are required to have a high school diploma. You can also join with a G.E.D but only if you have a clean record or if you enlist for a hard-to-fill job. You'll also need to score at least a 50 on your test(asvab). If you are a male then you have a shot at it but if you are a female you chances are very slim. And what i mean by clean record is when you dont have any trouble with the police, drugs or any kind of immoral activities. I sincerely hope you join. good luck. |

I think your GED should be accepted by the military (since your friend was and he only have a GED as well) The important thing to remember here is that it shouldn't matter if you go in with a regular high school dipoma or a GED, the more important thing that you need to focus on is trying to score high on the ASVAB. The higher you score, the better your chance of getting into and accepted by the branch of your choice. If you score high, you'll also have more job options available to you as to what you want to do once you have been properly processed in at your recruiter's office, at MEPS, or at basic-training.
Now, lets look at your criminal history. It will really depends on the nature of the crime and how serious it is OR they are. Since you said that it is "misdemeanor," it shouldn't be an issue with the military, but it'd still be a good idea to check with your recruiter first. He or she will be able to tell you all the information you need to know. After all, it is their job and I'm sure they will be as helpful as possible if it means trying to recruit one more person (makes them look good as they do have a quotus to meet)
So with all of the above being said, you shouldn't have too much of a problem trying to get in as your problems seems to be just minor offenses and petty things. Good luck son! |
