All Military pay is LOW, especially for enlisted. E-1 through E-5 family of three makes national poverty level wages $24,000 and below!

To start with the Navy pays more more than any other service.

And the Navy's SRB is the highest.

Every time you Re-Enlist they are offering a cap of $90k in front of you. [it changes depending on what your rate / NEC is. If your job is hard and requires a lot of schooling, then your SRB is higher].

The Navy routinely sees tax-free service. It is common to serve for decades where your salary is completely tax-free. I was tax-free from 1983 until I retired in 2001. The Army, AF, Marines will only see tax-free status while they are being shot at.

While most solders, marines and airmen are being paid 'base pay'; sailors routinely will bring home three to four times more.

In my case, base pay was commonly 1/4 of my take home paycheck.

If you want money to party with; if you want money to invest with; if you want money for college; then go for the highest pay.

Their will be folks who will lie to you, they will say that all military gets paid the same. Just ask any navy recruiter how much the current SRB level is for a ET1 Nuclear Reactor Operator, buckle your seat belt, as it will take a few minutes for him to look it up, but then $90k will be his answer.

I was not a nuc, but I got $65k every 4 years when I re-upped.

Also when you look at the paycharts, keep in mind that the Navy commonly pays sailors bunches of the extra pays and allowances.

During most of my career, I got:
BAQ,
BAS,
COLA, VHA,
Sub pay,
Career sub pay,
Sea pay,
Career sea pay,
Sea pay kicker,
Female separation pay,

All in addition to base pay.

By the way, I am a career submariner.

ET is a good rate. As are QM, RM, FT, TM, MM, IC, MT, and even HM [if you go IDC]

If you want to earn more money; then you need to go subs.

And you should look at each of these rates that I listed.

Good luck.

I just can not beleive how many folks will answer this acting like base pay is the only pay folks can get. Base pay is such a tiny part of it, that it is just stupid that they keep talking about base pay all the time.

Your recruiter has been in alot longer, and also gets a special incentive pay for being a recruiter. He is most likely living off base which is giving his BAH. The only way you can get BAH is if you are married or E5 or higher or officer. Otherwise you will be living in the barracks.

You earn more money as you have been in longer and the higher rank you are.

You will not start out earning as much money as your recruiter does right now.

Moderation in almost all things2

Air pay as a pilot and submarine pay are two sources.
Also SEA pay, and combat pay - which you loose when at shore time and away from combat arenas.

If you enlisted you will start at E1 or 2 or possibly 3 IF you are top 10% of a SCHOOL you can get instant raise to E-4 pay, but that's all I actually lived through.
I hope your in an officer program - because then I can see you'd make more money than your recruiter. Recruiters are E-6 or E-7 sometimes higher, but rarely. Only officers make more money - even Ensigns.

Lawl
the way to go is army.. go warrant officer for 20 yrs.. retire, get a government job (which is very easy if you've been in the army) do another 20 yrs, retire, and you've got 50% pay from both of your former jobs as retirement pay..

and as for the pay during it.. don't go enlisted o.O
you get sent to iraq every other year and the pay is horrible
but if you go warrant officer theres tons of "non-deployable" posistions you can do, but mainly overseas
and W3's (w1-w5 is tha ranks) get payed $58,000 a year, not counting housing or the c.o.l.a pay that you get if your overseas..

my job is in colombia, south america right now and they pay for everything here, house, food, car, and they give me c.o.l.a pay even though the currency here is worth less then the dolar, so it pretty much free money

DONT TRUST RECRUITERS. they will do anything to get you into the army. the worst way you can join the army is via a recruiter cus they just try to get you into the worst jobs that no one else wants.
