Basic is not a GAME as one person has said. Take it seriously and learn everything you can. Basic can be fun if you have an open mind and joined for the right reasons. Good Luck and Thank you for your Service.

Why shouldn't you be scared. You're going into a whole new life. Everybody is scared when they enter basic training. Just do as you are told to do and you'll be fine. Don't take what the Drill Instructors yell at you personally. |

Keep your mouth shut and do what you are told as quickly as possible...Basic has changed a lot since I went through in 92, but you still learn the same stuff...there will be a lot of yelling and push ups, but the push ups help you with your PT...remember it's the Drill Sergeant's job to yell at you...it is usually never personal...many of my friends have been Drills and they are cool people...Basic is fun, just look at it that way, it is fun...the worse part is being away from home...but after being deployed a few times and spending a year in Korea...Basic was a piece of cake... |

don't be scared. I remember when I went through basic... I was sitting in reception, in line getting my uniform issued and I was thinking "Oh God, what have I done...." LOL. You will be fine. Just keep your mouth shut, do what you are told... and pass your PT test. Don't be discuraged about anything... if you show that you are giving your best, you'll be fine.
In my opinion, being in reception was the worst part of basic. Hopefully you won't be there on a four day holiday like I was. LOL. Bring at least one lock for your bags in reception... the hold overs there are nuts and might get into your things while you are inprocessing etc. (that's what happened to us...lucky me didn't get things stolen from my bag). |

Yes pray to God that you are put in C/2-10 INF for your BCT, that was my unit in BCT and I had some of the best Drill Sgt's in the army, now this was almost 4 years ago, but still that unit has a reputation of being the best on post, just ask the medic's if you have have to go to sick call.
Be scared, it's natural, but spend as much time as you can with your friends and family before you go, 9 weeks may not sound like a long time, but some days will never end, and you'll hate almost ever minnute of it, espically THE PIT, but when you look back you'll realize how great it was.
Also be sure to have your family send letters, and before you go, RUN work on pushups situps and flutter kicks, your recruiter (who you will hate for the next few months or so once your in BCT) can show you how to best physically prepare.
Keep your eyes open and mouth shut in the beginning, always respond direct and with a firm voice; Yes Drill Sgt., No Drill Sgt, I don't know Drill Sgt! That's about the only things you will say to your Drill Sgt for the first 3 or 4 weeks, and try to avoid the I don't know part.
Other then that keep an open mind and remember everyone else who is going threw basic with you IS feeling the exact same emotions at the exact same time, so don't be afraid to show your emotions and lean on each other.
Good luck
Oh and one more thing, NEVER EVER say "thank you Drill Sgt" God don't ever say that, when they get done with you you will swear your arm's are about to fall off, mine sure did.
You thank your Drill Sgt by staying alive. |

Take it a day at a time and make up your mind that what ever they throw at you, you are going to take. This is so you can get your mind set at making it with resolve and letting nothing shake you. Congratulations on making a wise choice and serving your Country. This is what it is all about is serving your Country no matter what your personal feelings are. |

The drill sergeants are going to be yelling, but dont take it to heart... They only do this to toughen you up, and to get your mind in the military mindframe so you can start thinking about the Army, and not home..as much.. Just say "Yes Drill Sergeant", and do what you're supposed to do... You'll be just fine.
As for Ft. Lost in the Woods, alot of hills in the area, and of course trees. So start getting used to running, because those hills are going to hurt running up...
The first week is going to be the hardest, especially if this will be your first time away from home... Just make as many friends as possible in the first few days... Everyone you meet is going through the same thing, so they know exactly what youll be going through... They will be your best support program while youre there.
Good luck and try to have fun... Hooah |

I went in 01 it was good. Its more mental than physical. It gets you into good shape pt is the hardest everything else is good. Number one thing is to stay awake and pick a good battle buddy so that you dont get smoked in the pit. Especially in the rain. There are woods and it is easy to get lost. But other than learn alot and have fun. |

the best advise i could give you is to stay highly motivated, do everything with high intensity and you will come out on top. you still have a month if i where you i would be hitting the gym everyday pt is a big part in basic especially at fort lost in the woods good luck |

Do your best and follow your sergeants' orders throughout bootcamp, and remember what your recruiter advised you. Demonstrate your ability to be the leader want to be.
Hopefully, you are joining to get some specific techinical training that will be beneficial to you upon discharge, or, you may decide to make it a career. The benefits are excellent.
I hope they will have decided to withdraw troops from Iraq by the time you have completed AIT.
Best of luck to you...you'll do fine...and thank you for your decision to serve our country! |

Don't be scared. The copperheads there seldom bite unless you disturb them, and the black bears and mountain lions are scarce and won't bother you unless they're really hungry.
Watch out for the razorback pigs though, as they have nasty tempers and sharp tusks, and carry a lot of diseases. |

First of all, it's Fort Leonard Wood, not woods....and secondly that's where I did BCT back in 1989. BCT is all a mental thing. The hardest part for me was waking up in the morning (i'm not a morning person at all), everything else was a piece of cake. I just took it one day at a time, did my best, and everything from there took care of itself. And I was able to buy a car when I got home =).... |

The quicker you break down and work as a team player, the easier it is. Yeah, there will be some yelling, but it's just a part of the DS script.
My husband and I just got home last week from FLW. We were there for a few months for one of his classes and, honestly, the trainees down there appeared to have a bit more liberty than I had at Air Force basic training. I volunteered in the USO and they were always there. Quite a few at the PX too. Just get your stuff done and do what you're told and you'll be allowed the same freedom. |

You're cool! Just realize basic is the game where they try to break you. Take everything they have and laugh at it. Pretend you're starring in GI Jane |
