I'm a lefty and I heard they don't issue M-16's for leftys but they have to learn to shoot right handed is that true?

It doesn't matter which hand you use to write or throw with.
You will shoot on the side of your dominant eye (do a google search, you will learn something).
Your Drill Sergeant will help you determine which eye is dominant, and you will shoot on that side.
If your left eye is dominant, you will shoot left handed, and you will use a Brass Deflector (a little plastic doodad that clips onto the top/side of your rifle) to keep your spent rounds from hitting you in the face. (spent brass is hot, and doesn't feel good when it goes down your shirt) |

I am left handed, and learned how to shoot left handed.
In fact, my Drill Sergeant encouraged me to shoot with my dominant hand, because she wanted me to hit all my marks.
Your Drill Sergeant will never purposely set you up for failure. He/she wants to see you succeed, no matter how hard it is along the way.

They can put on a brass deflector and you can fire left handed. I do. Take a close look at gas masks, they are also designed to have the filter on either side so you can still shoot your preferred way.
Note: Brass can be hot and likes to land in the "v" of your arm when shooting prone position left handed. |

Yes you can shoot left handed, but when your Drill Instructor is instructing you, they usually direct as if everyone is right-handed, so you have to compensate. |
