I know private is at the bottom, then there's like, captain and lieutenant...
can you explain it in more detail? and what they do?

Private through Sergeant Major are enlisted ranks, which means you sign paper work and enlist in the army as a soldier. Lieutenants and up are officers, you have to go to same sort of college to become and officer and your job is to lead the people that enlisted. you also have warrant officers in the army, which are mainly your helicopter pilots, but you have to go to specialized training to be a warrant officer. Then some ranks are only given to a select few people, or given out in times of war. like Sergeant Major of the Army and General of the Army. Officers are of course at the top.
