In active duty Army, can you build up your leave over time if you don't take your 2.5 days every month?
Find answers to your legal question.

In active duty Army, can you build up your leave over time if you don't take your 2.5 days every month?

for example, if I didn't go on leave for 4 months would I be able to go on 10 days of leave? or something like that?

Yes, that is exactly how it works. You used to be able to "carry-over" 60 days. Meaning you could have that much saved up. Because of all the deployments most of the systems have been updated to allow up to 75 days of saved leave.

To take more than 30 days leave at a time you'd need a commander's permission.

I average a balance of about 42 days. It builds up to 50 or so and I take a week or two off. Then it builds back up.

I know many people that keep it right at 60-70 days.

Under the new policy that started in 2008 a Service Member can carry over 75 days of leave before it becomes use or loose. Currently my DH has over 70 days of leave because he can't take any right now. He's only got like 4 of that is use or loose so I KNOW for fact that you can have more than 60 days and have it not be taken away.

To answer the question. Yes, you can do that. if your unit allows that. Some units don't do leave that way and others do. Some do what is called block leave and that is the ONLY time they allow leave except for emergencies and use or loose. You will be briefed on what their polices are once you in process with them.

ETA On the 90 days of leave thing (Special Leave Accrual)
You MUST be/have been deployed to qualify for it. Here is a basic run down of how the SLA policy works .... SLA assists Soldiers unable to take leave due to operational requirements. Soldiers with approved SLA can carry forward up to 90 days of accrued leave into the next fiscal year. SLA is automatically approved for Soldiers who receive Hostile Fire Pay/Imminent Danger Pay for at least 120 continuous days during the fiscal year.

Yes, your leave builds up. I believe you can accumulate up to 60 days before you get use or lose. Use or lose is exactly how it sounds, you have to use it before the end of the fiscal year, otherwise you lose it.

Yes you can if you do not exceed 60 days. After 60 days you start losing leave every month and the Army frowns on that. They actually make you take leave so you don't lose it. Happened to me more than once. I was terrible at taking leave. Used to take five days a quarter and work anyway just to burn it up. Good luck to you

No. You have a maximum of 60 days to use unused days. After that you lose them.
