In the US Marine commercials why don't they show the truth.?

I don't see one Marine picking up brass or cigarette butts. Or getting woken up at 3 AM on a saturday because one of your Marines got a DUI and you have to go pick him up? Why don't they show field days?
Just a few thought for my fellow Marines. Additional Details USMC veteran 2003-2007

I know and I understand.
Now the Military is now a option, not a obligation like it was once long ago.
The Few, The Proud, A Marine can actually take all that and still have or feel the honor of being a US Marine.
What it boils down to is The Few Marines who remind you why you signed up and gave away 4/5/6 years of your life to a brotherhood that will be there for the rest of your life.
Even if you are KIA or WIA, you always be a US Marine to other Marines no matter what.
That is all that is offered in the end, the title of being a US Marine.
No Money, no adventure (Iraq or Afghanistan,) no one recognizes you and goes "HEY THAT'S A US MARINE!!", no sorry, no celebrity honorarium.
So why join? Why even bother...
But The Few do...and the rest wonder/ponder.. |

Dude, even the commercials they show me don't make me want to join. Do you think showing the truth would convince me?
Because I suspect you are seriously underestimating my ability to lie around and not care about one d*mned thing.
Add-on:
I'm not a Marine, and I do understand. You thought you were going on some huge adventure, and found out things aren't exactly as they seemed.
It's not all glitz and glamour and everyone looking at your shiny new sword, and then off on your adventure. It's scrubbing toilets and picking up buddies who are drunk.
I do that, occasionally. I just don't have someone yelling at me to do it; I just do it when the smell gets too much to take. |

Every job has its not-so-glamorous moments so OBVIOUSLY they're not going to advertise them on TV. People wanna see the "cool" aspects of the job they wanna sign up for. |

They also show a Marine with a sword. How many Marines actually get that. It is not general issue. Just a thought. |

Because if they showed all that stuff, everyone would join the Army instead ;)
That is, unless the army commercials started showing soldiers painting rocks, shoveling sidewalks, doing flutter kicks, waiting around for ten hours because some pvt lost his weapon, or sitting through endless powerpoint presentations. They don't flash pictures of closets full of TA-50 you will never use or the oh-so-fancy concoctions that can be made from an MRE.
Now that you mention it though, it would be funny if someone made a spoof commercial... |

Marines are candy dispensers. They are to make the occupies folks feel like free butlers have arrived lol.
The reason the commercials are fake, is the same reason why things like marines coffins are banned from media, or even violent imagery of real war.
Tone down, and fluff up. Shine and polish, add sprinkles and cool music. |

They show it like that so it seems 'glamorous' to the public. To get people to join. If they showed what it was really like, then the commercials would be useless - the average person doesn't want to do what is required in the marines. |

While they're at it, they should show 18 year old marines (kids with shaved heads) frantically rushing to get in formation on time, just to stand there indefinately waiting for "word to get passed down" on why they're there.
Or field days on a friday evening because the platoon commander doesn't have the balls to release his men until the company CO gives him the ok. |

Dude, you're being generous. What about those Marine commercials with the guy climbing in a wife beater up the side of a mountain? Or the one where the guy is going through a labyrinth of spinning blades and cuts off the head of a minotaur or something? Those commercials were hard core! Tell me I'm not the only one who remembers those. They always ended with the guy being transformed into a Marine in dress blues.
Edit: And just for the record, I think Navy commercials are worse. They make it look like everyone is either a fighter pilot or a SEAL. |

Because They Want More People To Join

Because they are trying to sell something. Just like if you were to sell something, you don't point out the flaws. I am in the Navy, and all you see are special forces in those add's. You don't see people painting, or cleaning the same spot for an hour. No scrubbing shitters, or eating the military food that comes in boxes marked "Grade E beef, Not for civilian consumption, for inmate and military use only". A few weeks later I see the same box with the same lettering with a stamp...."rejected from IL dept. of corrections" . You don't see people getting busted down from e-5 to e-3 because he sent out an inapproiate e-mail. You don't see the commanding officers receive their first command on a power trip, and run their crew into the ground and ruin them because they don't know how to lead. You don't see guys get singled out because the co and them don't get along. Example, I sent out a inapproiate e-mail to 2 people. One of them forwarded it to about 30 people. One of the 30 reported it. The guy that forwarded it said some one else got onto his computer and sent it. He walked away without punishment, and I was busted down from e-5 to e-3 for sending it to him. Three weeks later, another guy got a d.u.i. He did not lose rank, but received restriction. I guess the message this guy is trying to send to the crew is that it is ok to drive drunk, as long as you don't send out any e-mails. I came to work an hour late, first time I was ever late. I go to mast and get put on restriction. One of his officers show up 2 hours late and drunk, nothing happens to him. I do not hate the Navy, but this c.o. has ruined my carier. Never a captains mast in 7 years. The only time I talked to previous co's in an offical manner was to receive awards. This guy get's here, I go to mast three times in 18 months. I am thankfull for this, other wise I would have retired and missed my children grow up. I have now seen the light and been brought back to reality, and obtained a civilian job paying twice my salary, with twice as much time off! I have 25 days left until I never have to see this gray hunk of sh!t mine sweeper again!!! Since they are paying me as an e-3 now, I am giving them e-3 quality work, and I am having fun doing it. My give a d@mn is busted. |

Why would they show such things in a recruiting commercial. You don't see the Navy showing people chipping paint, grinding decks, cleaning up after a CHT spill, or any of the other nasty jobs they have on a ship. |

Why dont medicine companies make commercials primarily about side effects? Why dont car commercials show accidents. Why dont cigarette companies align themselves with the truth campaign. Why didnt Mccain donate campaign funds to Obama?
Why didnt you use that Jar you call a brain and ask a few questions before you joined the Marines. Why didnt you use that same Jar before you asked this question.
Its hard enough to get recruits, as it is. |

That is why it is called the Marines! And the quote states The Few The Proud the Marines!! We can certainly see that you are not worthy to be one. Also, if you are that stupid to think that that when you look at the commercials, they are the whole picture of the USMC, I have a bridge in Brooklyn for SALE!!

I came across this post while doing some research. Makes me wonder how many of you posters are Marines, or former Marines who served honorably (i.e. didn't get booted for drug use, etc.) As a currently serving Marine in Afghanistan with over 20 years in the Corps (enlisted and officer) I can honestly say that those commercials represent what it feels like to serve in the Marine Corps. True, not everyday is being dressed up in your blues standing on the golden gate bridge... But being in NYC during fleet week post combat deployment makes you feel pretty good. I have never climbed a mountain to be struck by lightning and appear in my dress blues... but I have been to mountain warfare school and climbed mountains that made me feel good about myself and proud to be a Marine. I have cleaned my share of toilets, but I have also been to over twenty countries and fought along side many good Marines in three different wars. I am a pilot now flying the V-22 and if I let the daily grind form my opinion I would lose site of the number of Marines that I have safely moved around Afghanistan in my aircraft. For those of you looking to make fun of the commercials, have at it, you wouldn't understand. For those of you wondering if the commercials are representative of service in the Marine Corps, I for one say hell yes. |
