In the military, how do the american children get educated when they are stationed in other countries?

My daughter is going to live with her grandparents, in Poland this year. Grandpa is retired Navy and can get on military bases. Is there anyway that my daughter, going to home school, could check in with the teachers they have at the bases?

Howdy,

The United States Department of Defense runs an educational system for the children of those in the military.

I found more at their official site (listed below). This quote sums up the organization's mission:

"DoDEA's mission is to plan, direct, coordinate, and manage the education programs for eligible dependents of U.S. military personnel and civilian personnel of the DoD stationed overseas. DoDEA provides an exemplary education that inspires and prepares all students for success in a dynamic, global environment."

Again, according to their official site, the organization is very successful in turning out smart, well-rounded kids. Students in the program "consistently achieve high scores in the National Assessment of Educational Progress and above the national average on standardized assessments."

You can read more about the curriculum and standards by clicking the second link below. If you're interested in contacting one school in particular, check out the third link.

DOD school system. I don't believe that you'll be able to get much help from them since they are there for the children of active duty soldiers and DOD civilians. Look over their web site and see if they have the answers to your question or perhaps a phone number. I'm not sure there are any DOD run schools in Poland though.

American bases are like small cities. They will have a school on base and will be taught there. Being an American base, there will more than likely be American teachers teaching to the American curriculum by American standards.

I have a friend who was practically raised in Germany on base. She was accepted to an American University because of her grades in Germany as an American student in an American school.

A lot of kids in rural america learn by computers via a virtual classroom where maybe the teacher is teaching in New York city. In our town you cannot hire teachers for every subject when there is only 12 high school students.
So we learn by computers from teachers in other cities.
Since this is the world wide web perhaps they do the same thing.

Usually with large base they have their own school for children and it looks and is run just like schools here.

They have schools stationed on base.

Most large overseas bases have schools on base. Sometimes, people are stationed in places where it is not recommended to bring families (near the DMZ in Korea comes to mind). Some of these people may chose to bring there families anyway. If they do it's up to them to make arrangements for educational needs.

she will not be authorized to utilize the DoD school system.

Usually the bases have schools on them, but if your grandma is retired, and home schooling, i dont know what the base's school will do, you would probably have to get in contact with the base to find out.

i would . my dad and his siblings all started out in schooling and they and they all went to ivy league schools. i would its free and just like any other school in this country.

They have military schools on the bases being in Poland the would be DODDS Europe. If your daughter is going to stay with a retiree they may have to pay for her to go to school on post. You may want to research it more online at http://www.eu.dodea.edu/ I hope this helps!!

Military kids typically attend American schools while they live outside of the country.

Military kids typically attend a school on the base or in the local area. If there is no suitable school sometimes a parent may opt to home school or send their kids to 'international school'.

For home schooling, I'd find a network in Poland and see if she cant get attached to them OR simply make contact with the local school in the area and ask if its possible for them to support her.

Grandpa might be retired military, but that doesn't mean your daughter will be entitled to education assistance from the military itself.
