Information about waiver required for joining the navy and security clearances?

I have a misdemeanor charge for marijuana and my recruiter said I would need a waiver. He also said that this would not make me eligible for over seas stationing or anything rate requiring a security clearance.
Is there anything else to this? Would it be worth joining without a security clearance? Would this limit me on how far in rank I can go? Also how long will this waiver process take?

First off it IS worth it to join without a clearance. A majority of the jobs in the Navy do not require clearances. It will not limit advancement ops. I really don't know how long your waiver will take. |

It wouldnt limit you as far as rank goes, to a certain point anyways. Some MOS's promote faster then others and you may not be able to get such an MOS with your charge. As far as the waiver goes it can be as quick as a phone call or it can take months, it all depends how much your recruiter works it up the chain.
A security clearance is a great thing to have if you ever decide to leace the military, especially the higher clearances. |

Just a bit about the clearance... the charge, will prevent you from getting a security clearance. You will be limited to certain jobs and assignments because of that. There are still plenty of jobs that don't require a clearance however. Depending on the time elapsed from the charge, you might be able to get a clearance after 7 years. |
