Iraq war worthless? (details)?

It seems to me the people who know the least seem to yell the loudest about this war, and refuse to listen to the people who actually know what is going on. I would think three tours in Iraq would give someone the right to have a correct opinion about the Iraq war. A perfect example is the following story:

http://www.usmc.mil/marinelink/mcn2000.nsf/ac95bc775efc34c685256ab50049d458/20161cca5cedfe1d852573460016d6b1?OpenDocument

Why don’t you see this in the news? What is your opinion of this article?

I'm not saying Iraq is perfect, what I am saying is that there is progress. America is an instant gratification nation, and thus refuses to accept small steps of achievement, only wanting one big victory. There is no "fast track" for war... never has been, and never will be.

Matthew O- go ahead, try and use the "only making the Marines look good" story. CPL Syvrud is my husband, and has no interest in doing anything other then his job. Making himself or an administration look good is not his goal. You seem to forget Marines at the end of the day are human just like you.

The problem is that the people who talk the loudest get all of their information from CNN, ABC, NBC, etc and the Internet...I have asked a question before out of all the Anti-war people on here that want to bring the Troops home right now actually know anybody in the Military...very few did and the ones who did they were like someone that went to their school...I was in the Army for 13 years and work for the Army as a Civilian now...I know many, many people who have been to the "Sandbox" several times, and they all say the same thing...it is not as bad as the news makes out and why don't they report the good stuff we are doing, not just the IEDs? What many do not realize is that is what the terrorist want, they wants the US to get tired of the war and quit...even thought we kill a 100 to our 1 they will still win if we cut and run...Osama himself cited Clinton pulling out of Somalia as the reason he attacked us because he said Americans can not stand death and they (the terrorist) look forward to dying...I have lost 15 friends so far in this war...we can not quit until it is done...the people that want to quit have no intestinal fortitude and probably would quit anything if it got hard....thank your husband for what he does, and tell him the people who count know that they are doing a great job...

I can't agree with you more about how much this country has become an instant gratification society. It certainly explains the debt this nation's humans are in. I can't afford it right now so I'll charge it! If we don't see fast turnabout on anything, we get rid of it... from playing the stock market to flipping houses. The "I WANT IT NOW" attitude has to go!

My reserve unit was activated at the end of my enlistment so I extended to serve. I didn't re-up to kill but to liberate. It's a shame that so many humans are so worried about their own little circle that could care less about any one other than themselves. When is the last time you saw any one pull over alongside a broken down car to aid someone in need? I'll bet it's few and far between. I like to help people and that's why I served. To put some one above and before yourself is a selfless act that may go un-noticed by everyone else but it didn't go un-noticed by me!

I saw changes in the time I was there... good and bad. I'd like to think the good outweighs the bad and in the end... it has to be better than it was!!!

Your Marine and all of our troops know more about what's happening than anybody.
Just remember, some people are too short sighted to even begin to see the big picture.

You are so right. Most liberals have never joined the military and they couldn't possibly know anything about it but yet they keep lying and BSing all day long. Is it any wonder why liberals have been deemed liars?

no, it is not worthless,,
I have friends and neighbors form Iraq,,they were celebrating in the streets here rejoicing that their fellow countrymen are NOW free.

One of them had volunteer to be a translator for the military, he was there for a year, when he had came back here to the states , he had compare our country's his quote "it is much more safer in Iraq than Detroit" ( after his cousin was shot for 10 bucks in downtown right across the street form the 'new" ballpark)

Another friend wants to know where are the media finding the people to take the polls about the war , because almost everybody she knows back in Baghdad are in favor of us being there.
It is true that we do not hear that our medical teams had help increase the birth rate, in both Iraq and Afghanistan, help improve cancer patients live longer, where under the former dictatorship's if you had cancer or where pageant you would have not received any decent care.

What I'm trying to put in words , is that the media is always reporting their opinions not facts, more so opinions and news about the Hollywood nitwits than the truth.

I'd rather hear the news about the conflict form my friends and neighbors before the media.
and most of our country does not reliase that there is no such thing as a prefect war.

Your husband and you are in thoughts and prayers and send a big Thank You form myself and my neighbors,

chris s
I know for a fact that there is progress. Unfortunately it an unpopular war so the best media is BAD media. Maybe if the public and media focused on positives it would show us more support and possibly a quicker exit. Everyone wants an answer...a reason WHY......but at this point it is a little too late.

Thank you very much for the article. It definitely demonstrates how far Iraq has come in so short of time. Communities are banding together and rebuilding their identities and their infrastructure. Local economies are beginning to emerge, and most of all, people feel safe.

The Iraqi Army is being tutored and they are growing as well. Nations are developed from the ground up-from the local economies and the local people. It was local people that chose to revolt against the British and caused the United States to form together as one nation under God. It will be local people in Iraq who become emboldened by the help your husband gives them to take charge of their nation and become the nation they need to be to participate and prosper in the global marketplace and economy.

Problems still exist with Iraq's federal government, and al-Maliki is a little too close to al-Sadr (who is much too close to Iran) for his own good. But the people elected Maliki, and they will need to decide what to do with him at the next election.

Nevertheless, the results show the surge is working, and our soldiers and marines are the best of the best.

God bless your husband and your family, and all those who serve. God bless Iraq and may God bless the USA!

Mr. Knowledgeable VI
I believe that if the United States leaves Iraq, there will be a Rwandan Genocide (that occurred in 1994) in Iraq, and event I NEVER WANT TO SEE AGAIN IN MY LIFETIME.

The Republican Party is a party that understands Freedom and Democracy. Republicans do not like dictators and they know that dictators NEED TO GO. Saddam Hussein was a Dictator Who Did Not Care For The Iraqi People. He had over 1,000 Iraqi's murdered every month. Today, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki is trying his best to lead the country. It is just unfortunate that Liberal Democrats and the Liberal Media does not support al-Mailki and they Live In Everyday Denial about the TRUTH.

I know that Iraq is not perfect, but then again, nothing in life is Perfect. You cannot meet the Perfect Person. Do you think your perfect because I know I am not perfect. No countries in the world are perfect and nothing in society is perfect.

I can assume that you believe that the United States should leave Iraq. I recommend that you watch the movie Hotel Rwanda about how a hotel manager named Paul Rusesabagina helps to save over 1,200 lives during the Rwandan Genocide when the United Nations and the Western World did nothing to help. If you choose to watch the movie, ask yourself if you want to see the tragic events that occured in Rwanda to occur in Iraq because I know I never want to see an event like the Rwandan Genocide to occur anywhere in the world again. I do not want to see thousands and thousands of men, women, and children who have their futures ahead of them be massacred by those who cause harm and evil.

As for the news, if you want to hear the TRUTH happening in Iraq, I suggest you watch The 700 Club (Christian Broadcasting Network) because CBN is the only news show that tells you the truth happening in the world and they tell you stories that Fox News does not even tell you.

Lovely story. Why do you say that because he did three tours he has the right to have his opinion be correct? An opinion is an opinion. Now I'm certainly glad that some regions of Iraq have experienced positive change, but I don't think anyone should delude themselves into thinking that the people of Iraq will eventually all turn around and embrace democratic values and start pitching in. I don't want instant gratification, but I don't think that I will see an ancient people throw away 12,000 years of behavioral tradition to embrace an idea that was only briefly successful before its eventual failure in one region over 2000 years ago. I have a limit to how long I'll support having troops in harm's way. Especially since I've already been lied to innumerable times as to the "mission".

As far as I can see the only "progress" Bush can point to is the "re-branding" of Rumsfeld's "dead-enders, remnants of the Republican Guard, and Baathists" into allies against al-Queda.

We never negotiate with terrorists unless we need to.

The war is, was, and will remain illegal according to international law (UN Charter Articles 39 & 51) and domestic law (Article VI of the Constitution).

al-Maliki is a dead man and that will pull the last fragment of the fig-leaf Bush used to cover his criminal act. No WMDs No bin-Laden link and when we kill al-Maliki there will be no Democracy either.

I suspect the final blow will come when the resistence in Iraq pulls off their version of the Tet Offensive and we start kicking people off the copters.

George Bush is an idiot!
the fact that you agree with his war at all means you are an idiot!

he said he said he was going in for saddam-hus- saine (or however you spell that)
and it turned into one more thing and another.
he is killing americans and the people in Iraque for pointless reasons!
The fact that you even say this may be all right disgusts me.

And is he there fighting... NO
are you... NO
what makes you think your such an expert?

Your source is hardly unbiased. But, I'll take it at face value. It really doesn't make a difference to me one way or the other.

The objection that I have to the war has nothing to do with the tactics used, or the casualties we suffer. My objection is that we shouldn't be there. Period. Bush lied to the American people about reports of WMD's. Period. This has nothing to do with 'instant gratification. We have toppled the government, and spent six years in an unsuccessful attempt to stabilize the region. It's clear that our military didn't think much beyond the initial invasion.

I don't, won't and never did approve of this war. It's a free country, and I will continue to 'scream' that we should stop using our military to strong-arm other nations. It's costly, it's immoral, and our country is no safer than it was when Bush took over.

patriotwww
There is absolutely no bias in that article. Wow a drink of love in the desert of hate! After being around someone for three years, its hard not to become familiar, don't you think. So I expect that if we stay there long enough, everyone will become buddies. Lets start moving Marines families over there to stay! That should do it!

digital dan
there sure was a "fast track" to starting this war though.
